With the demise of European socialist economies and the marketization of Asian communist countries, a new global capitalism has reshaped the configuration of the world economy, with speed a determining factor to all transactions of information, finance, goods and services and people. Sea-ports that were significant for a slower but no less global economy have been undergoing transformation to stay economically and culturally relevant. Some manage to reinvent themselves as tourist cities, some face decline if they do not manage to transform. This volume looks at a number of port cities in Asia and Europe that face this pressure. With contributions considering history, contemporary developments, contacts between ports, the representation of ports and the relations between port cities and their hinterlands. This comparative study identifies many parallels between local histories and developments in the Asian and European port cities, as well as new opportunities for sharing experiences and learning from the developments and decisions in similar situations in other port cities.

This volume, which grew out of a conference of the same name held in 1976 in Santa Cruz, fills an important niche in the literature on Asian urbanism. Its three major themes are: the nature of relationships between city and hinterland; the role and character of mercantile elites; and urban morphology. First Published in 1997. The dynamic role of port cities has been a major element in the thrust of modern port city literature since. In the process interactions between history and other disciplines, above all geography, economics and town planning resulted in a growing number of collaborative volumes. Indicative of the broad front, multi-disciplinary approach and challenging agenda of this wave of port town and port city studies is the collective and diverse nature of the themes and authorship of each of these works. That very diversity of disciplines, nationalities and perspectives is also one of the main pillars supporting Gateways of Asia. It is not a repetition or summary of the introduction and first chapter of Brides of the Sea, but the publication of this volume, in many ways a sequel to that work, does provide the opportunity of clarifying a few points and elaborating on some issues raised after its publication.

Many port cities can be conceived as archetype places where the origins of modern health conditions and modern public health strategies can be analysed. It is not surprising therefore that considerable interdisciplinary researches, drawing explicitly on work in medical, global, demographic, economic, political, social and urban history has been undertaken in recent years. This small volume brings together a series of contributions covering the development of port cities in the late 19th and early 20th century – the period of “The Birth of The Modern World” (Christopher A. Bayly), and which were presented at the Sixth Conference for the Asian Society for the History of Medicine, 14-15 December 2012, Keio University, Hiyoshi Campus, Yokohama, Japan and on Public Health in European and Asian Port Cities at the Birth of the Modern world in the late 19th and early 20th century at the 12th International Conference on Urban History, Lisbon, Portugal, September 2014.
