Report Of The Eighth Meeting Of The Who Strategic And Technical Advisory Group Of Experts For Maternal Newborn Child And Adolescent Health And Nutrition 14 16 November 2023

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The eighth meeting of the Strategic and Technical Advisory Group of Experts (STAGE) for maternal, newborn, child and adolescent health and nutrition (MNCAHN) was held in Geneva on 14–16 November 2023. Most of the STAGE members attended in person while five attended the meeting online. They were joined by WHO staff at headquarters and online from regional offices, and 50 observers from partner organizations. The meeting agenda included three new topics (maternal well-being, birth defects and complementary feeding) and detailed updates on various topics from the previous meetings (maternal newborn stillbirth transition framework, maternal and newborn health (MNH) commodities, midwifery models of care, caregiver practices as part of child and adolescent health well-being, and kangaroo mother care (KMC)). The preparatory work included meetings either with existing working groups of STAGE or with small subgroups with the co-chairs of the two workstreams and select STAGE members. These groups provided inputs to the WHO technical teams for the preparation of background information and for the presentations to STAGE. The open sessions on each day enabled inputs from STAGE members, WHO regional offices and observers from various organizations, while the closed sessions with STAGE members helped consolidate the STAGE recommendations. These were further finetuned through online consultations with the members and the final STAGE recommendations are provided in this report.

Disaster Nationalism

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The rise of the new far right has left the world grappling with a profound misunderstanding. While the spotlight often shines on the actions of charismatic leaders such as Donald Trump and Jair Bolsonaro, the true peril lies elsewhere. Defeating these people will not stem the tide driving them forward. They are merely the embodiment of profound forces that are rarely understood. Propelled through the vast networks of social media and fueled by far-right influencers, enthralled by images of disaster and fantasies of doom, they have emerged from a reservoir of societal despair, fear, and isolation. Within this seething cauldron, we witness not only the surge of far-right political movements but also the sparks of individual and collective violence against perceived enemies, from 'lone wolf' killers to terrifying pogroms. Should a new fascism emerge, it will coalesce from these very elements. This is disaster nationalism. Richard Seymour delves deep into this alarming development in world politics, dissecting its roots, its influencers, and the threats it poses. With meticulous analysis and compelling storytelling, Seymour offers a stark warning. The battle against disaster nationalism is not just political; it is a struggle for our collective soul and the future of civilization itself. Unless we understand the deeper forces propelling the far-right resurgence, we have little chance of stopping it.

Infection Prevention And Control And Water Sanitation And Hygiene Measures For Diphtheria In Health Care Settings

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This operational guide addresses important infection prevention and control (IPC) measures that should be implemented during a diphtheria outbreak and primarily addresses respiratory Corynebacterium diphtheriae (C. diphtheria). IPC measures are based on the principles of standard and transmission-based precautions. When implemented effectively, IPC measures can prevent or control transmission, keeping patients, health and care workers and visitors/caregivers safe. Key advice in this guide includes ensuring health and care workers are vaccinated with diphtheria toxoid-containing vaccines; isolating suspected or confirmed cases in well-ventilated single rooms and utilizing droplet precautions with additional personal protective equipment (PPE) based on risk-assessment when maintaining a distance of 1 meter is not possible; and ensuring visitors or caregivers also adhere to PPE requirements and receive proper instructions on hand hygiene and PPE usage. Accompanying the operational guide is a one-page summary.
