Current preoccupations with the 'rise of Asia' attest to the nascent contestation of the very idea of what the pattern of international politics should look like and how it should be practiced. In this respect, the growing reference to a 'shift to the East' in global politics has become a popular shorthand for the nascent 'power transition' in world affairs. This volume offers a detailed conceptual and empirical investigation of the dynamics of power transition in Asia and details the accommodation strategies and coping mechanisms of different small and middle powers in Asia and, importantly, China's responses to these approaches.

This edited volume examines how the transition and diffusion of power in global politics is impacting on stability and order in Asia. Both in the academic field of International Relations (IR) and among policymakers, the big question today concerns the rise of China, the relative decline of the United States, and the increasing importance of Asia in global politics. The level of impact the international power transition will have in the region remains unclear, but observers agree that Asia is a potential tinderbox for crises and conflict. This volume brings together leading scholars from around the world to assess current thinking in IR on these issues. The authors apply appropriate theories and methods of analysis in their specific area of expertise to examine the likely effects of the changing global power distribution on Asia. There is also said to be an ongoing diffusion of power away from states to non-state actors in the region; hence, in addition to examining changing relations between the Great Powers, the book will also assess the implications that other actors, from terrorist groups, insurgents and organised crime syndicates, could have on stability and order. This book will be of much interest to students of Asian politics, security studies, diplomacy and international relations.

As China¿s economic, political, cultural, and military influences continue to grow globally, what kind of a global power will China become? What kind of a relationship will China develop with the United States? How does the United States maintain its leadership in world affairs and develop a working relationship with China so that China can join hands with the United States to shape the world in constructive ways?

This book covers critical debates on policies, markets and emerging issues that shape renewable energy transition in the Asian region, which is fast becoming an epicenter of the global energy consumption. The chapters focus on domestic policies, geopolitics, technology landscape and governance structure pertaining to the development of renewable energy in different Asian countries ranging from China to the Middle East. The book presents an insightful view of the pace and magnitude of the energy transition. It presents critical steps countries are taking to promote affordable and clean energy (SDG 7) as well as strengthening climate mitigation actions (SDG 13). This book examines the power transition between the US and China, and the implications for Europe and Asia in a new era of uncertainty. The volume addresses the impact that the rise of China has on the United States, Europe, transatlantic relations, and East Asia. China is seeking to use its enhanced power position to promote new ambitions; the United States is adjusting to a new superpower rivalry; and the power shift from the West to the East is resulting in a more peripheral role for Europe in world affairs. Featuring essays by prominent Chinese and international experts, the book examines the US–China rivalry, the changing international system, grand strategies and geopolitics, foreign policy, geo-economics and institutions, and military and technological developments. "China's threat to U.S. global hegemony has dominated international policy discussion for years. But the power transition debate-whether the growing power, China, is bound to challenge and overtake the bigger power, the United States-relies on a theory almost exclusively based on European examples from the past 400 years. Xinru Ma and David Kang argue in this concise, incisive book that-as China is not an eighteenth-century European state fighting for survival against a number of similarly-sized states-China's example can shed new light on how great powers behave. China is a massive and ancient civilization centrally located in the East Asian region. Upon closer inspection, China itself has historically worried very little about expansionist war from a rising power, let alone carrying one out. An examination of over 1,500 years in East Asian history reveals that power transition wars almost never created a transition in power between different nations. More prevalent in East Asian history is dynastic transition, with seventeen out of twenty regime changes resulting from internal rebellion. Had power transition theory started with East Asian history rather than European history, it would emphasize the domestic risks and constraints on great powers. If scholars and policymakers want a meaningful discussion of a way out of today's great power conflict between the United States and China, rather than threat inflation, then they need a more careful analysis of both contemporary China and the historical record. The lessons of East Asian history are clear: both contemporary China and the United States face considerable internal challenges that are more pressing than external threats"--

The questions that arise out of this task and will be answered are: How satisfied is India with the status-quo of the international system and how will China's rise in power change India's overall state satisfaction? In face of America's relative decline, the continuous existence of the established international order, the Pax Americana, throughout the twenty-first century is more and more becoming a question of the rising states’ satisfaction with this order. More specifically, it is becoming increasingly clear that India, as the second main driver of the global power shift, will play a significant role in deciding the future of the international system. To answer these questions a quick overview of the global and regional power shift and China's and India's respective state power are given. Afterwards, the theoretical framework for power transitions, the power transition theory, is explained with a focus on the role of state satisfaction and how it can be measured. Public opinion polls and key foreign policy initiatives, as well as alliances, are analyzed to estimate India’s state satisfaction with the current system and the influence China’s rise in power has on it.

This book provides a comprehensive analysis of Japan’s Asian diplomacy under Prime Minister Shinzō Abe. Under the Kantei-centred policymaking system, Shinzō Abe has implemented assertive foreign policies with a slogan of ‘diplomacy taking a panoramic perspective of the world’. The analyses in the book cover the traditional and emerging fields of national security and international political economy. While its empirical examination is based on field-specific research, it also incorporates the analysis of Japan’s bilateral relations with China, the US, India, and others. In addition, the book provides a solid, theory-driven analysis of Japan’s external policy and relations. In an independent chapter, this work sets up integrative theoretical frameworks for empirical analyses by relying on key concepts drawn from the three international relations theories of realism, liberalism and constructivism. Going forward, research in this book also explores the development of key regional affairs. Maritime security and space security are two of major security-related affairs, in which the states in East Asia and the Asia-Pacific have to engage, including the development of the TPP (TPP-11) and RCEP, as well as infrastructure development and development cooperation, which are crucial in relation to China’s initiatives in the BRI and AIIB. Lastly, the book provides valuable references to regionalism in East Asia and the Asia-Pacific by analyzing regional integration/cooperation through free trade agreements and the development of regional connectivity. This includes the evolution of cooperation and conflict within key regional frameworks such as the East Asia Summit and APEC, as well as key regional visions such as the Free and Open Indo-Pacific. It also takes into account the possible influence of ideational factors such as norms, principles, and rules on the development of regional cooperation.
