This collection contains 24 articles on the history of linguistics written between 1978 and 1988, divided into three parts:1. Methods and Models in Linguistic Historiography 2. Tradition and Transmission of Linguistic Notions 3. Schools and Scholars in the History of LinguisticsThree articles are written in German, two in French and one in Italian. The remaining eighteen articles are in English.

This volume brings together — in 8 chapters — what has occupied the author during his many years as editor of Historiographia Linguistica. Namely, how the history of linguistics has developed into a major field of scholarly research, and that the discussion of questions of method and epistemology needs to be continued to avoid stereotypical practice. The author takes up a number of subjects that often had been regarded as settled, but which require a revisit. This is shown in several chapters, whether it appears subjects like ‘analogy’ or the relationships between well-known linguists like Saussure, Hermann Paul, and others.

V.1 The eastern traditions of linguistics -- V.2 Classical and medieval linguistics.

Based on articles, some of which have been revised and updated or enlarged, previously published in the Encyclopedia of language and linguistics (1994); the chapter on the Hebrew grammatical tradition is new.

This fascicle contains the complete bibliography up to 1999 of E.F. Konrad Koerner, the founder and director of the journal Historiographia Linguistica (1974-), and editor of Diachronica and of various specialized linguistic series. Koerner's scholarly work, which is surveyed in the introductory "Biographical notice" (by P. Swiggers) focuses on the history of linguistics in the past two centuries, especially on the relationship between historical-comparative grammar and various forms of "general linguistics". The "Biographical Notice" is divided into seven sections: Books and Volumes edited; Articles, Chapters in Volumes and Minor Papers; Review Articles and Reviews; Miscellanea: Papers read; Journals edited; General Editorship. In the first paper that follows the bibliography, Koerner presents a critical overview of linguistic historiography and outlines some prospects. The second paper explores the delicate question of the role of ideological convictions in linguistics, and in human sciences in general.
