Published in 1998, this book provides detailed information on the financial markets in selected Central European transitioning economies. The independent countries selected for study in the text are Poland, Hungary, the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic. The former East Germany is also include due to its proximity to the above countries and its unique experience in the transition process. Each country's section of the book contains articles written by professionals in the selected country. These individuals are economists, central bankers and/or analysts who have first-hand knowledge of the financial system. Each section details: the development in the banking sector plus the role of the central bank and the government in guiding the economy toward the market system; discuses the emerging capital markets and the ongoing process of privatization; and provides an update of the economic progress toward a market system that has been achieved since 1989.

This book helps students, researchers and quantitative finance practitioners to understand both basic and advanced topics in the valuation and modeling of financial and commodity derivatives, their institutional framework and risk management. This paper describes the CNB’s experience implementing an inflation-forecast targeting (IFT) regime, and the building of a system for providing the economic information that policymakers need to implement IFT. The CNB’s experience has been very successful in establishing confidence in monetary policy in the Czech Republic and should provide useful guidance for other central banks that are considering adopting an IFT regime.

The monograph summarizes a significant part of the results of the research project entitled “Foreign Trade in Special Economic Zones in Poland”, financed by the National Science Centre in Poland (project no. DEC-2013/11/D/HS4/04007). The project aimed at identifying the real impact of SEZs on Poland’s trade turnover. Its implementation focused on expanding the available scope of knowledge on the impact of the SEZs on the Poland’s trade and has enabled to join in the ongoing national and international academic debate on further functioning of various types of areas of special preference. Moreover, the research permitted for identification of microeconomic determinants of the impact of the SEZs on business entities in terms of their export activities contributing to a wideningof scientific achievements in the field of economics. The book covers unique approach to the analysis of foreign trade. It presents a macroeconomic, mesoeconomic and microeconomic perspective on the effects of special economic zones operation with regard to foreign trade to provide a better understanding of consequences of SEZs’ establishment (for country, region or a firm). To the knowledge of the authors, this is the first (so comprehensive) evaluation of SEZs functioning thereof.

This book presents the numerous tools for the econometric analysis of time series. The text is designed with emphasis on the practical application of theoretical tools. Accordingly, material is presented in a way that is easy to understand. In many cases intuitive explanation and understanding of the studied phenomena are offerd. Essential concepts are illustrated by clear-cut examples. The attention of readers is drawn to numerous applied works where the use of specific techniques is best illustrated. Such applications are chiefly connected with issues of recent economic transition and European integration. The outlined style of presentation makes the book also a rich source of references. The text is divided into four major sections. The first section, "The Nature of Time Series?, gives an introduction to time series analysis. The second section, "Difference Equations?, describes briefly the theory of difference equations with an emphasis on results that are important for time series econometrics. The third section, "Univariate Time Series?, presents the methods commonly used in univariate time series analysis, the analysis of time series of one single variable. The fourth section, "Multiple Time Series?, deals with time series models of multiple interrelated variables. Appendices contain an introduction to simulation techniques and statistical tables.

There has been a widespread move toward more market-oriented policies and institutions across the developing and former socialist countries. 31 country studies were undertaken to try to understand the divergent results of these reforms. This book presents the findings of these studies, synthesized on a regional and global basis.
