This book examines the pre-service teacher education policy development of seven countries, including the USA, the UK, Japan, Canada, Singapore, Australia, and Russia. This book reviews the history of pre-service teacher education policies in those countries and discusses relative case studies on pre-service teacher training practices. It also identifies problems in current pre-service teacher education in those countries and proposes potential countermeasures to resolve those issues. This book serves as a useful reference for various stakeholders in the teacher education field.

Globally, and within the United States, we continue to progress toward a more diverse and inclusive culture. This fact is perhaps reflected nowhere better than in the public school system in the United States, where, by 2029 (NCES, 2020), non-white students will outnumber white students in classrooms. The challenges that the current system of education confronts in ensuring equitable access and equal achievement are also well-documented (Darling-Hammond, 2015). A key component in the re-shaping and development of a more equitable and inclusive system are the pre-service teachers enrolled in our college and university teacher preparation programs across the country. As we prepare for the diverse classrooms of the future, we need to prepare the teachers of the future to not only be able to teach all students but to also have the cultural competencies to ensure the same access and opportunities are provided to all students. It has been well documented (Cunningham, 2015; Lupi & Turner, 2013) that international education experiences, or international field experiences, have a positive effect on both the professional development and cultural competencies of pre-service teachers. Across a wide range of performance outcomes, pre-service teachers with international field experiences are better equipped to enter the field (DeVillar & Jiang, 2012) and may even persist longer in the profession (Egeland, 2016). However, not all international experiences provide the same positive outcomes. In this book, we will explore the importance of developing culturally competent educators in the United States education system, the research that supports the benefits of international education experiences, and how to develop effective international education experiences that will prepare pre-service teachers for the classrooms of the next decade and beyond.

This book utilises expectancy–value theory and undermining effect of extrinsic reward theory to examine the impact of the Central Government-Funded Teacher Education (CGFTE) policy on Chinese pre-service teachers' motivations for choosing the teaching profession. Quantitative data analysis revealed six distinct categories of motivations to teach: teacher influence, job advantages (extrinsic), social value (altruistic), personal interest (intrinsic), others' suggestions, and fallback career. These categories were further exemplified in ten narrative stories. The findings indicate that the CGFTE policy attracts high-school graduates with higher intrinsic motivation to enrol in teacher-training programs, but it seems ineffective in increasing their intrinsic career-choice motivation. It is argued that the CGFTE policy, which emphasises extrinsic benefits but limits professional development, does not have a significant negative impact on pre-service teachers' motivation to choose teaching. This conclusion is supported by the offsetting effects of the policy's restrictive and encouraging aspects, as explained by expectancy–value theory and the qualitative data. Nevertheless, the intrinsic motivation of policy-funded pre-service teachers did not improve as much as that of their self-supported counterparts, indicating potential undermining effects of the policy. The study concludes by discussing the implications of these findings for enhancing the CGFTE policy, teacher training, and career education in China. The book will be an essential read for students and scholars of higher education, Chinese studies, and educational studies in general.

This edited book explores different international practices in reforming science teacher education programs for STEM education. Incorporating case studies in Asia, the Middle East, Africa, Europe, North America and South America, the contributors emphasise the large variety in STEM teacher preparation. Including science-centric versions of STEM programs as well as more integrated models of STEM, this contextual diversity will help readers learn about the design, opportunities, and challenges of STEM teacher preparation in a variety of circumstances, in order to innovate and improve STEM education more broadly.

Since the establishment of Pakistan in 1947, the country has announced more than 15 education policy regimes directing the improvement of education. Each policy has been ambitious in its aims and critical of past failures. A common feature of all policies, plans, programs, and schemes, however, is that all of them have failed to achieve their objectives. Even programmes using international resources have been unsuccessful in significantly changing Pakistan's education sector. The country has been well-advised over the past decade by local, international and donor agencies regarding what is not.

This book explores teacher workplace learning from four different perspectives: social policy, international comparators, multi-professional stances/perspectives and socio-cultural theory. First, it considers the policy and practice context of professional learning in teacher education in England, and the rest of the UK, with particular reference to professional masters level provision. The importance of teachers’ and schools’ perceptions of improvement, development and learning, and the inherent tensions between individual, school and government priorities is explored. Second, the book considers models of teacher workplace learning to be found in international research and practice to explore what perspective they can bring to understanding policy and practice relating to workplace learning in the UK. Third, it draws on cross-professional analysis to get an intellectual and theoretical purchase on workplace learning by examining how insights from across the professions can provide us with useful perspectives on policy and practice. The analysis draws particularly on insights from medicine and educational psychology. Fourth, the book cross-fertilises research and practice across the field of education by drawing on insights from perspectives such as socio-cultural and activity theory and situated learning/cognition to discover what they can offer in analysing the theoretical and pedagogic underpinnings of teacher workplace learning. In short, the book offers a number of contexts for exploring how best to conceptualise and theorise learning in the workplace in order to generate evidence to inform policy and practice and facilitates the development of a more theoretically informed and robust model of workplace learning and teaching.

In 1999, the year when the Bologna declaration was signed, the foundation of the European Network of Teacher Education Policies (ENTEP) was proposed by the Portuguese Minister of Education to his Colleagues in the European Union Member States. 'Teacher Education - The Bologna Process and the Future of Teaching' reflects current challenges of Teacher Education in Europe based upon these 20 years of development. The Bologna process has become a crucial reference point for the modernization in higher education institutions. ENTEP, as European network of policy makers and researchers, has been working along these lines and has always sought to bring to fruition its vision for a European Higher Education Area (EHEA), where Teacher Education has a special place in the European landscape. In this volume, ENTEP members from different countries cover fundamental questions of teacher education in the European Higher Education Area. They discuss crucial aspects like fundaments, Initial Teacher Education, lifelong learning, evaluation, policy making, research and efforts to build bridges into the future. Thus, the book might serve as a starting point for discussions about future roles of teachers in Europe on different levels towards a European development of teacher professionalism.

This book is a narrative inquiry that focuses on four participating Chinese teacher candidates’ cross-cultural learning in Canada and stories of induction in Southwest China. Through the lens of “three-dimensional inquiry space” and “reciprocal learning in teacher education,” the author explores the influence of cross-cultural experiences on the dissonance of pedagogies, teacher-student relationships, socialization, and beliefs about teaching and learning that interweave global and national curriculum boundaries. The chapters provide insight into how Chinese beginning teachers struggle to voice and to socialize among a cacophony of past practices, lived experiences, and cross-cultural experiences.
