Preacher With My Daddy S Genes

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Preacher with My Daddy's Genes contrasts the created life and body that we were blessed with versus the understanding of that life in knowing that we are sole proprietors to the actions of that life and body. We are our own entity occupying space with purpose, but we must get to know who we are before ever being an aid to anyone else. Yes, there are genes and even imprinted ways that can be passed down through the generations, yet we must comprehend that we are held accountable to and for ourselves. There must be a conservative effort to learn what genes come from you and what genes were passed down to you through the generations. Learning who you are and what you are capable of can help you when helping others and also guide you away from that in which you are not as strong or proficient. There is one particular life struggle indebted to all flesh because of blood ties, but we must identify its generational existence and ask God to make it whole for its correct usage in giving glory back to God. We were created to manifest beauty in the atmosphere and speak love to our neighbors; however, this can only be achieved by asking God to order your life! Although I am a preacher with my daddy's genes, Lord, allow me to walk in my father's will for my life.

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A priest, a postie, a parish, a suburb, a city, a diocese, an unusual and deep friendship, a struggle to get a book published The Postie and the Priest is part biography, part philosophy, part social commentary, part theological reflection. Here is a fl y-on-the-wall account of the daily life of an iconic Melbourne priest who has a deep passion for the battlers of his city, written by his postman who began by delivering his letters and ended up recording his life story. The stories from Fr Bob Maguire's life recall family events, life in the seminary, time as an army chaplain, work in various parishes, media connections and above all, his passion for the organisations he founded -Open Family and the Fr Bob Maguire Foundation - that give voice to his concern for the underprivileged and the homeless of Melbourne. The postie admires the priest and tells his story but this is as much the postie's story, giving us a unique insight into the history, characters and streets of South Melbourne that have shaped the lives of both men.

The Good Priest S Son

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Reynolds Price, one of America's most distinguished and honored writers, has produced such masterpieces as Noble Norfleet, Roxanna Slade, and Kate Vaiden, winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award. Now in The Good Priest's Son, his fourteenth novel and thirty-sixth book, Price gives us another penetrating study -- full-length portraits of five arresting characters. On September 11, 2001, Mabry Kincaid -- a fiftyish art conservator -- is flying home after a much-needed rest in Rome and Paris. Halfway across the Atlantic, his plane is diverted from New York to Nova Scotia. Two days later, when the United States has recovered sufficiently from the attack on the World Trade Center, Mabry discovers that his downtown New York loft is uninhabitable. He flies south to North Carolina instead to visit his aged father. A widowed Episcopal priest, Tasker Kincaid has been injured in a recent fall and is cared for by live-in Audrey Thornton, an African-American divinity student at Duke University, and her grown son, Marcus, an ambitious painter. During a week in North Carolina -- with help from his cantankerous father, from Audrey and Marcus and from Gwyn Williams, an old flame -- Mabry is compelled to explore his tormented relationship with his father and with a world that still harbors much that he's loved but has long since abandoned. On his return to New York -- and in a swift and unexpected return to the south -- Mabry must deal with the near-ruin of his loft, with haunting memories of his infidelities to his recently deceased wife, with the end of his childhood family, the uncertainty of his professional career, the ambivalence of his adult daughter, and with a daunting likelihood that is terrifyingly at work inside his body. Reynolds Price writes at peak form in this lean and masterful, comic yet profoundly moving novel -- one that unfolds the stages of one man's hope for ransom in old familiar worlds that are now forever changed.

Daughter Of The Cherokee Strip

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The largest land grab in American history was the opening of the Cherokee strip in 1893. This book narrates the triumphs and struggles of those days as experienced in the life of Pioneer James Secord's daughter, Mildred, her sibliings, and her own family. The powerful influence of frontier preachers is told as well as the influences of the country school teacher who taught eight grades in one room. The results with the discipline of life in Cherokee Strip produced in the Secord family: college professors, ministers, missionaries, farmers and school teachers. Mildred became a school teacher at Fairview school. She married the Farmer boy who promised to get her away from it all. Starting with Horse and Buggy he went to Model T's, Farms, much Machinery, lots of Livestock, and a large family on Credit. They went through three of the greatest social and economic changes of the 20th Century. Depression, Dust bowl days, WWII. The book is the opposite of Steinbeck's GRAPES OF WRATH. We were in debt too far to sell out. Father taught us to work, Mother taught us to Pray. The Hope of "next year we will get a bigger crop and a better price" happened in WWII. Mildred prayed five boys through the War. When all the boys came home the large family became College professors, Farmers, Ministers and School Teachers just like the pioneer Secord family did a generation earlier.
