Legal Aspects of the New International Economic Order draws together the results of discussions from the 58th Conference of the International law Association held in Manila in September 1978. Many there, including a number of contributors to this insightful book, felt that proposals for the establishment of a new international economic order bristled with complex legal issues, which merited the serious attention of lawyers. Moved by the conviction that these proposals aimed at restructuring international economic relations and effective a global redistribution of wealth and power, presented a challenge to legal creativity, the Conference adopted a resolution urging the International Law Association to undertake a study of the Legal Aspects of a New International Economic Order. Legal Aspects of the New International Economic Order draws together the papers that came from that study, to offer a fascinating and powerful examination of the legal challenges thrown up by the establishment of this new order.

The Obstacles to the New International Economic Order examines the most critical human, social, and economic obstacles confronting the establishment of the New International Economic Order (NIEO). One such obstacle is the structure of the international monetary system and the problems it creates for achieving the development financing objectives of the NIEO through such factors as the dollar dependence of the world economy, coupled with liquidity excess in the principal money markets. The Objectives of the New International Economic Order focuses on the role of the New International Economic Order (NIEO) in the resolution of issues in world economy, international trade, economic policies, trade relations, and business practices. In the academic year 1977-1978 Tilburg University celebrated its fiftieth anniversary. The commemoration involved specific scientific activities. The theme of 'Innovation', broadly de fined as 'developments in sciences and society', offered the scientific framework in which these activities took olace. The present volume is one of the results. It consists of the texts of a series of lectures held at the Department of Eco nomics of Tilburg University. The Department's Colloquium Committee, set up to organize discussions on current research, arranged the lectures. On this occasion, the committee decided to draw attention to the multidisciplinary character of re search in the area of NIEO, the New International Economic Or der. Political and Institutional Issues of the New International Economic Order covers various issues concerning New International Economic Order (NIEO), specifically those of political and institutional in nature.
