This book contains complete solutions to the more than six hundred exercises in the authors' book: Invitation to operator theory--foreword.

This book consists of three major parts. The first two parts deal with general mathematical concepts and certain areas of operator theory. The third part is devoted to ill-posed problems. It can be read independently of the first two parts and presents a good example of applying the methods of calculus and functional analysis. The first part "Basic Concepts" briefly introduces the language of set theory and concepts of abstract, linear and multilinear algebra. Also introduced are the language of topology and fundamental concepts of calculus: the limit, the differential, and the integral. A special section is devoted to analysis on manifolds. The second part "Operators" describes the most important function spaces and operator classes for both linear and nonlinear operators. Different kinds of generalized functions and their transformations are considered. Elements of the theory of linear operators are presented. Spectral theory is given a special focus. The third part "Ill-Posed Problems" is devoted to problems of mathematical physics, integral and operator equations, evolution equations and problems of integral geometry. It also deals with problems of analytic continuation. Detailed coverage of the subjects and numerous examples and exercises make it possible to use the book as a textbook on some areas of calculus and functional analysis. It can also be used as a reference textbook because of the extensive scope and detailed references with comments.

The present book is the second of the two volume Proceedings of the Mark Krein International Conference on Operator Theory and Applications. This conference, which was dedicated to the 90th Anniversary of the prominent mathematician Mark Krein, was held in Odessa, Ukraine from 18-22 August, 1997. The conference focused on the main ideas, methods, results, and achievements of M. G. Krein. This second volume is devoted to operator theory and related topics. It opens with the bibliography of M. G. Krein and a number of survey papers about his work. The main part of the book consists of original research papers presenting the state of the art in operator theory and its applications. The first volume of these proceedings, entitled Differential Operators and related Topics, concerns the other aspects of the conference. The two volumes will be of interest to a wide-range of readership in pure and applied mathematics, physics and engineering sciences. This book is for third and fourth year university mathematics students (and Master students) as well as lecturers and tutors in mathematics and anyone who needs the basic facts on Operator Theory (e.g. Quantum Mechanists). The main setting for bounded linear operators here is a Hilbert space. There is, however, a generous part on General Functional Analysis (not too advanced though). There is also a chapter on Unbounded Closed Operators.The book is divided into two parts. The first part contains essential background on all of the covered topics with the sections: True or False Questions, Exercises, Tests and More Exercises. In the second part, readers may find answers and detailed solutions to the True or False Questions, Exercises and Tests.Another virtue of the book is the variety of the topics and the exercises and the way they are tackled. In many cases, the approaches are different from what is known in the literature. Also, some very recent results from research papers are included.

This book contains 25 papers, most of which were presented, for the first time, at the International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications held in Groningen, the Netherlands, from June 30-July 3, 1998. The topics include dilation and interpolation problems, reproducing kernel spaces, numerical ranges of operators, Riccati equations, harmonic analysis, spectral theory of differential operators and analytic operator functions to scattering of waves. All papers deal with operators in Banach or Hilbert spaces, or in spaces with an indefinite metric. This volume is dedicated to Israel Gohberg, one of the founding fathers of the IWOTA worskhops and an outstanding leader in operator theory. His work had a deep influence on the field and its range of applications. The IWOTA Groningen 1998, the tenth in its series, was a good occasion for a pre-celebration of his 70th birthday. This book also contains the speeches held at the workshop dinner, a review of Israel Gohberg's contributions to mathematics and a complete list of his publications. The book is of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians.

Many developments on the cutting edge of research in operator theory and its applications are reflected in this collection of original and review articles. Particular emphasis lies on highlighting the interplay between operator theory and applications from other areas, such as multi-dimensional systems and function theory of several complex variables, distributed parameter systems and control theory, mathematical physics, wavelets, and numerical analysis.

This monograph describes mathematical methods applicable to studying nonclassical problems of mathematical physics. The emphasis of the book is on applications of the interpolar theory of Banach spaces to the theory of linear operators to be expotentially dichotomous, to some continuity properties of linear operators in Hilbert scales, to the Riesz basis property of eigenelements and associated elements of linear pencils and the correspondending elliptic problems with indefinite weight functions, and to studying nonclassical boundary value problems for first order operator-differential equations.
