This book compiles a number of contributions originating from the KESE (Knowledge Engineering and Software Engineering) workshop series from 2005 to 2015. The idea behind the series was the realignment of the knowledge engineering discipline and its strong relation to software engineering, as well as to the classical aspects of artificial intelligence research. The book introduces symbiotic work combining these disciplines, such as aspect-oriented and agile engineering, using anti-patterns, and system refinement. Furthermore, it presents successful applications from different areas that were created by combining techniques from both areas.

This book describes in contributions by scientists and practitioners the development of scientific concepts, technologies, engineering techniques and tools for a service-based society. The focus is on microservices, i.e cohesive, independent processes deployed in isolation and equipped with dedicated memory persistence tools, which interact via messages. The book is structured in six parts. Part 1 “Opening” analyzes the new (and old) challenges including service design and specification, data integrity, and consistency management and provides the introductory information needed to successfully digest the remaining parts. Part 2 “Migration” discusses the issue of migration from monoliths to microservices and their loosely coupled architecture. Part 3 “Modeling” introduces a catalog and a taxonomy of the most common microservices anti-patterns and identifies common problems. It also explains the concept of RESTful conversations and presents insights from studying and developing two further modeling approaches. Next , Part 4 is dedicated to various aspects of “Development and Deployment”. Part 5 then covers “Applications” of microservices, presenting case studies from Industry 4.0, Netflix, and customized SaaS examples. Eventually, Part 6 focuses on “Education” and reports on experiences made in special programs, both at academic level as a master program course and for practitioners in an industrial training. As only a joint effort between academia and industry can lead to the release of modern paradigm-based programming languages, and subsequently to the deployment of robust and scalable software systems, the book mainly targets researchers in academia and industry who develop tools and applications for microservices.

This book constitutes the thoroughly refereed post-proceedings of the Third International School and Symposium on Advanced Distributed Systems, ISSADS 2004, held in Guadalajara, Mexico in January 2004. The 25 revised full papers presented were carefully reviewed and selected from 46 submissions. Among the topics addressed are virtual characters, distributed toolkits, serial visual presentation, multi-agent architectures, MAS, agent-object hybrid languages, robot soccer agents, distributed querying, semantic search engines, coordination, distributed collaboration, virtual communities, peer-to-peer networks, P2P systems, distributed search mobile objects, load balancing, distributed algorithms, scheduling, and distributed information systems.

Recent rough estimates are that the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) spends at least $38 billion a year on the research, development, testing, and evaluation of new defense systems; approximately 40 percent of that cost-at least $16 billion-is spent on software development and testing. There is widespread understanding within DoD that the effectiveness of software-intensive defense systems is often hampered by low-quality software as well as increased costs and late delivery of software components. Given the costs involved, even relatively incremental improvements to the software development process for defense systems could represent a large savings in funds. And given the importance of producing defense software that will carry out its intended function, relatively small improvements to the quality of defense software systems would be extremely important to identify. DoD software engineers and test and evaluation officials may not be fully aware of a range of available techniques, because of both the recent development of these techniques and their origination from an orientation somewhat removed from software engineering, i.e., from a statistical perspective. The panel's charge therefore was to convene a workshop to identify statistical software engineering techniques that could have applicability to DoD systems in development.
