BOOK EXCERPT:

This book includes new results of theoretical and experimental studies of various scales of the processes occurring on the earth including the lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. Intensive development of research in these areas is due to several factors: 1) the widespread introduction of computer technology, allowing the calculation of complex phenomena; 2) the invention and improvement of a new generation of geophysical instruments such as remote observation systems based on ships, aircraft, and satellites, providing a large amount of data to objectively reflect a broad picture of the processes; and 3) the development of measurement techniques, creating opportunities for controllable and reproducible laboratory data acquisition for generation of new ideas and concepts. Their recent developments have facilitated our research and understanding of these academic fields. The book enriches the understanding of the geophysical processes taking place in various environments (lithosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere), including the anthropogenic one, and it further contributes to their development. This book is a valuable resource for specialists working in the oil, gas, and engineering industry to improve their understandings of the field.

Advanced Hydrodynamics Problems In Earth Sciences

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book explains the dynamics of natural systems – the geosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere – and their interactions, along with the human contribution to naturally occurring processes, which is one of the most urgent and practically important scientific problems of our age. The widespread use of sophisticated, tremendously powerful supercomputers now allows us to model complex phenomena that were previously inaccessible for analysis. Further, the introduction and advancement of a new generation of geophysical instruments – remote observing systems installed on ships, aircraft and satellites – make it possible to gather huge amounts of objective, representative data. The articles presented here offer valuable insights into the laboratory modelling of geo-environments and testing of newly developed physical and mathematical models.

Encyclopedia Of Environmental Analysis And Remediation Volume 8

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This encyclopedia is composed of an eight-volume set that provides an overview of the field of environmental analysis. The contents are divided into major content areas including air pollution control, environmental law, and environmental sampling. Thevolumes are organized alphabetically with each article signed by the author(s). The individual articles begin with a summary of the topic heading and then divide the text into subtopics indicated by boldface headings. The articles are written clearly, however, the authors assume a basic knowledge of chemistry and math on the part of the reader. For example, the acid mine drainage article refers to the Arrhenius equation, but does not clarify this statement in the text. Each article contains graphs as well as pictures to illustrate points made in the text. The articles are long and provide a detailed explanation of each topic. The authors also provide a bibliography at the end of each article.Special features of the encyclopedia include a list of contributors, a table of conversion factors and a list of abbreviations and acronyms. The preface outlines the general contents of the encyclopedia. The preface also includes sections that suggest the target audience and recommended usages for the set. The final volume of the set contains an alphabetic index to the topics contained in the volumes.

Geoheritage And Geotourism Resources

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This Special Issue outlines the role of geoheritage and geotourism as potential touristic resources of a region. The term “geoheritage” refers to a particular type of natural resources represented by sites of special geological significance, rarity or beauty that are representative of a region and of its geological history, events, and processes. These sites are also known as “geosites” and, as well as archaeological, architectonic, and historical sites, can be considered as part of the cultural estate of a country. “Geotourism” is an emerging type of sustainable tourism, which concentrates on geosites, focusing on visitor knowledge, environmental education, and amusement. Geotourism may be very useful for geological sciences divulgation and may provide additional opportunities for the development of rural areas, generally not included among the main touristic attractions. The collected papers focused on these main topics with different methods and approaches and can be grouped as follows: i) papers dealing with geosite promotion and valorization in protected areas; ii) papers dealing with geosite promotion and valorization in non-protected areas; iii) papers dealing with geosite promotion by exhibition, remote sensing analysis, and apps; iv) papers investigating geotourism and geoheritage from tourists’ perspectives.
