The 19th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry, ECMI2016, was held in Santiago de Compostela, Spain in June 2016. The ECMI conferences are organized by the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry with the aim of promoting interaction between academy and industry, leading to innovation in both fields and providing unique opportunities to discuss the latest ideas, problems and methodologies, and contributing to the advancement of science and technology. This book presents a collection of papers emphasizing applications of mathematical models and methods to real-world problems of relevance for industry, life science, environment, finance and so on. The biannual Conference of ECMI (the European Consortium of Mathematics in Industry) held in 2014 focused on various aspects of industrial and applied mathematics. The five main topics addressed at the conference were mathematical models in life science, material science and semiconductors, mathematical methods in the environment, design automation and industrial applications, and computational finance. Several other topics have been treated, such as, among others, optimization and inverse problems, education, numerical methods for stiff pdes, model reduction, imaging processing, multi physics simulation, mathematical models in textile industry. The conference, which brought together applied mathematicians and experts from industry, provided a unique opportunity to exchange ideas, problems and methodologies, bridging the gap between mathematics and industry and contributing to the advancement of science and technology. The conference has included a presentation of EU-Maths-In (European Network of Mathematics for Industry and Innovation), a recent joint initiative of ECMI and EMS. The proceedings from this conference represent a snapshot of the current activity in industrial mathematics in Europe, and are highly relevant to anybody interested in the latest applications of mathematics to industrial problems.

The 15th European Conference on Mathematics for Industry was held in the agreeable surroundings of University College London, just 5 minutes walk from the British Museum in the heart of London, over the ?ve warm, sunny days from 30 June to 4 July 2008. Participants from all over the world met with the commonaimofreinforcingthe roleofmathematics asanoverarching resource for industry and business. The conference attracted over 300 participants from 30 countries, most of them participating with either a contributed talk, a minisymposium pres- tation or a plenary lecture. ‘Mathematics in Industry’ was interpreted in its widest sense as can be seen from the range of applications and techniques described in this volume. We mention just two examples. The Alan Tayler Lecture was given by Mario Primicerio on a problem arising from moving oil through pipelines when temperature variations a?ect the shearing properties of wax and thus modify the ?ow. The Wacker Prize winner, Master’s student Lauri Harhanen from the Helsinki University of Technology, showed how a novel piece of mathematics allowed new software to capture real-time images of teeth from the data supplied by present day dental machinery (see ECMI Newsletter 44). The meeting was attended by leading ?gures from government, bu- ness and science who all shared the same aim – to promote the application of innovative mathematics to industry, and identify industrial sectors that o?er the most exciting opportunities for mathematicians to provide new insight and new ideas.

This volume contains the proceedings of the twelfth conference of the Euro pean Consortium for Mathematics in Industry. ECMI was founded in 1986 in to foster research and education in Mathematics in Industry in Europe order and these biannual conferences are the show case for ECMI's research. It is a pleasure to see that six of the plenary speakers have submitted papers for this volume. Their contributions illustrate the breadth of applica tions and the variety of mathematical and computational techniques that are embraced by ECMI. ECMI is also committed to the education of students and it is encouraging that a number of the papers are given by students. The Wacker Prize, which is offered for a Masters Level thesis on an industrial problem, always attracts excellent entries and this year's winner, Nicole Marheineke, is no exception. This is the first time that an ECMI conference has been held in Eastern Europe and the ECMI Council is very grateful to Professor Andris Buikis and his colleagues in Latvia and Lithuania for the excellent job they have done. Thanks too go to the European Union which supported 30 delegates at this conference via TMR Contract No ERBFMRXCT 97-0117 'Differential Equations in Industry and Commerce'. The final meeting of this network was held during this conference which provided a platform for network members to describe their work to a wider audience.

The use of new and efficient mathematical techniques for solving industrial problems is steadily growing. For the industry it is a source of innovation and a tool to improve efficiency, for academic mathematics it means challenging problems and an interface to career opportunities for the students. Here the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry aims to create contacts between industry and academia, and to promote research in industrial mathematics. The book examines recent practical and theoretical developments in mathematical techniques for industrial problems. Realizing the need of interaction between universities and research groups in industry, the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI) was founded in 1986 by mathematicians from ten European universities. Since then it has been continuously extending and now it involves about all Euro pean countries. The aims of ECMI are • To promote the use of mathematical models in industry. • To educate industrial mathematicians to meet the growing demand for such experts. • To operate on a European Scale. Mathematics, as the language of the sciences, has always played an im portant role in technology, and now is applied also to a variety of problems in commerce and the environment. European industry is increasingly becoming dependent on high technology and the need for mathematical expertise in both research and development can only grow. These new demands on mathematics have stimulated academic interest in Industrial Mathematics and many mathematical groups world-wide are committed to interaction with industry as part of their research activities. ECMI was founded with the intention of offering its collective knowledge and expertise to European Industry. The experience of ECMI members is that similar technical problems are encountered by different companies in different countries. It is also true that the same mathematical expertise may often be used in differing industrial applications.
