BOOK EXCERPT:
This work proposes an entirely new type of plants, with a vertical axis of rotation, and with reduced costs, due to the method of construction and to the reduction in materials used. In addition, the most interesting aspect is the possibility of constructing plants that are much more powerful than those existing at present with a linear increase of the costs/power ratio. In fact, by building plants with an effective power 20 times greater than that of the most powerful current wind power plants built to date, about 68,000 plants would be sufficient to meet today’s world energy needs satisfied by non-renewable sources. Furthermore, in a future scenario with world population increased to 10 billion and average consumption per capita equal to that of the most industrialized countries (but excluding countries with high consumption of energy), the overall energy needs would be covered by about 165,000 plants.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Three quarters of our current electricity usage and transport methods are derived from fossil fuels and yet within two centuries these resources will dry up. Energy Economics covers the role of each fossil and renewable energy source in today’s world, providing the information and tools that will enable students to understand the finite nature of fossil fuels and the alternative solutions that are available. This textbook provides detailed examinations of key energy sources – both fossil fuels and renewables including oil, coal, solar, and wind power – and summarises how the current economics of energy evolved. Subsequent chapters explore issues around policy, technology and the possible future for each type of energy. In addition to this, readers are introduced to controversial topics including fracking and global warming in dedicated chapters on climate change and sustainability. Each chapter concludes with a series of tasks, providing example problems and projects in order to further explore the proposed issues. An accompanying companion website contains extensive additional material on the history of the major types of fuel as well as technical material relating to oil exploration, the development of solar power and historical environmental legislation. This textbook is an essential text for those who study energy economics, resource economics or energy policy.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Wind power is developing rapidly, in terms of both the number of new installations and in interest from stakeholders including policy-makers, NGOs, research scientists, industry and the general public. Unlike the majority of other texts on wind power, which are written primarily for engineers or policy analysts, this book specifically targets those interested in, or planning to develop, wind power projects. Having outlined wind power basics and explained the underlying resource and technology, the author explores the interactions between wind power and society, and the main aspects of project development, including siting, economics and legislation. This book will be an essential reference for professionals developing new sites, government officials and consultants reviewing related applications, and both specialists and non-specialists studying wind power project development.
