BOOK EXCERPT:
This book gathers 14 original contributions published in an IJERPH Special Issue that deal with the perception of environmental sounds and how such sounds are likely to affect human quality of life and well-being and the experience of a place. The research focus over the years has been gradually shifting from treating sound simply as “noise” and something that cities should get rid of to a potential “resource” to promote and support community life in public spaces. Three main topics or “needs” to be addressed by researchers and practitioners emerged from this Special Issue: (1) the need to re-think “quietness” in cities as something that goes beyond the mere “pursuit of silence”, (2) the need to integrate additional contextual factors in the characterization and management of urban acoustic environments for public health, and (3) the need to consider the acoustic quality of indoor spaces as opposed to an outdoor-only perspective. The contributions collected in this book will hopefully trigger new questions and inform the agenda of future researchers and practitioners in the environmental acoustics domain.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Soundscape Basics and Practical Implications Soundscape research represents a paradigm shift, as it involves human and social sciences and physical measurements to account for the diversity of soundscapes across countries and cultures. Moreover, it treats environmental sounds as a resource rather than a waste. Soundscape and the Built Environment is the first book to systematically discuss soundscape in the built environment. It begins with a presentation of theory and basic background, answering questions such as: what is soundscape, how is it important, and how does it affect people in terms of their health and perception on the acoustic environment. The book then sets out tools for implementing a soundscape approach, with measurement techniques, mapping, and good soundscape practices. It also delivers a series of examples of the application of the soundscape approach in planning, design, and assessment. Discusses soundscape and environmental noise Explores cultural variations and the way they influence soundscape Introduces binaural measurement technology and psychoacoustics Examines the physical, psychological, and physiological restorative mechanism of high-quality acoustic environments Presents soundscape mapping based on human perception of sound sources Includes real-world examples and case studies highlighting the key issues in soundscape intervention Soundscape and the Built Environment is written by a group of leading international figures and derives from a four-year EU COST project on Soundscapes of European Cities and Landscapes. It presents a consensus on the current state of the art and is not merely a collection of different views. It is written for acoustic consultants, urban planners, designers and policy makers, as well as for graduate students and researchers.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Much more than a book about flexible working, Beyond Hybrid Working is an engaging and practical management book to help organisations rethink all aspects of traditional work in the emerging post-pandemic landscape and reap the benefits from working smarter. Many organisations that had rapidly improvised and implemented Hybrid Working now want to take a more strategic approach. ‘Smart Working’ is being adopted across sectors, from technology companies, through the financial services sector to the public sector. Andy Lake has supported implementations in businesses and public sector organisations for nearly 30 years, including advising the UK Cabinet Office. He sets out a strategic, comprehensive and integrated approach to Smart Working in the context of new possibilities for working on a more distributed basis, and the impact of new AI-based technologies coming over the horizon. He also explores the possibilities for greater flexibility for workers with hands-on and site-specific roles. Featuring detailed case studies, the book takes a pragmatic and evidence-based approach covering different sectors and types of work, and presents practical techniques for implementing change. This is essential reading for anyone involved in transformational workplace change and increasing the efficiency of organisations. It is written for managers who need to deliver change, and professionals and researchers in the fields of People, Workplace and Technology.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book provides innovative, practical tools to help combat declining personal wellbeing in the higher education workplace. Divided into two sections, the book looks at wellbeing from institutional and individual levels. It outlines a framework for how wellbeing in the higher education workplace can be evaluated and clearly sets out initiatives for what can be done to improve faculty wellbeing. The book also explores issues such as the once vocational nature of academia, the extent to which institutions can provide allied health care and examines initiatives that individual faculty members have introduced for themselves. Representing new ideas, perspectives and a variety of approaches to supporting and promoting wellbeing in the higher education workplace, this book will be of interest to academic staff as well as professional development personnel in higher education.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The revised edition of Acoustic Territories: Sound Culture and Everyday Life offers an expansive reading of auditory life. It provides a careful consideration of the performative dynamics inherent to sounding and listening, and discusses how sound studies may illuminate understandings of contemporary society. Combining research on urbanism, popular culture, street life and sonic technologies, Acoustic Territories opens up a range of critical perspectives--it challenges debates surrounding noise pollution and charts an "acoustic politics of space" by engaging auditory experience as found within particular cultural histories and related ideologies. Brandon LaBelle traces sound culture through a topographic structure: from underground territories to the home, and further, into the rhythms and vibrations of streets and neighborhoods, and finally to the sky itself as an arena of transmitted imaginaries. The new edition includes an additional "global territory" of the relational, positioning acoustics as a range of everyday practices that rework dominant tonalities. Questions of orientation and emplacement are critically raised, reframing listening as multi-modal and intrinsic to resistant socialities and what the author terms "acts of compositioning." The book is fully updated to include new relevant research and references surfacing since 2010, as well as a new preface to the second edition. Acoustic Territories continues to uncover the embedded tensions and potentialities inherent to sound as it exists in the everyday spaces around us.
