It is our pleasure to introduce to the readers of Advances in Psychosomatic Medicine: I, the authors of 88 papers presented at the VIth World Congress of the International College of Psychosomatic Medicine in Montreal, September 13-18, 1981. These papers are re presentative of more than 700 presentations and discussions that occurred in the course of lectures, symposia, panels and workshops. Adam J. Krakowski, M.D., primary editor of this volume, together with Chase P. Kimball, M.D., GUnsel Koptagel-Ila1, M.D. and Hellmuth Freyberger, M.D. are responsible for the solicitation and final editing of the papers included in this volume. Most of the plenary papers presented at the Congress and subsequently received for pub lication are in preparation for a volume to be issued by S. Karger, Basel, Switzerland, as a special number edited by us with the assistance of Drs. Freyberger and Koptagel-Ilal. The papers in cluded in this volume represent the main substance of the Congress. The editors regret that a number of presentations were either re ceived too late or in insufficient form to allow for publication at this time. A number of other papers presented at the Congress have been released for publication in the Journal of Psychosomatic Re search, the Psychiatric Journal of the University of Ottawa, General Hospital Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and other journals.

Modern psychosomatic medicine is a comprehensive framework for a holistic (biopsychosocial) perspective of illnesses and patient care. It highlights the influence of psychosocial factors on health, the interaction between psychosocial and biological factors in the course and outcome of diseases, and a whole perspective with respect to treatments. This book discusses holistic approaches to both organic and psychopathological diseases. Over three sections, authors address psychosomatic approaches to fibromyalgia, palliative care, anxiety and depression, obesity, and traumatic stress disorders.

This book contains selected contributions to the 16th European Conference on Psychosomatic Research, held in Athens from September 6 to 11, 1986. The ~t of psychosomatic medicine was one of the two basic topics of the meeting. We thought that, since this topic has a touch of history in it, it would be appropriate for a conference held in Greece. It is really amazing how advanced the psychosomatic conceptions of the ancient Greek philosophers and physicians were. It was the basic psychosomatic ideology that Socrates was expressing when he taught: "S"lOTT!::P O

Men born to distinction do not always develop it in their homeland. Sometimes trans plantation taps routes to hidden sources of concern for the embracing of novel con cepts or the clarification of man's behavior, illuminating this understanding in the lan guage of their adopted tongue. Such a one was Joseph Conrad, the Polish sailor whose new vision graced our literature long after his death in 1924. Such a one also is the author this book, who was born in that same year to carryon his country's vigor and resourcefulness in our time. He is numbered among those distinguished emigres whose contributions to our culture and progress emanated from the trials and tribulations of the political upheavals, persecutions, and wars of Europe. Like many others, he has brought sound traditions and learning from his native land to enhance the new and less developed of what was only recently a frontier land. Watersheds in world events impose themselves willy-nilly on our lives. One such time was 1946, when the author of this book left his native land and set out for the West. He spent six months in London learning English and then moved to Ireland, where he trained in medicine and also absorbed novel ways and a new culture, includ ing the writings of Swift and Joyce. This young medical graduate's potential was soon recognized by his teacher in neurology at Belfast, who with foresight predicted great accomplishment.

Psychosomatic Medicine (PM) is a rapidly developing subspecialty of psychiatry focusing on psychiatric care of patients with other medical disorders.
