Climate Just Behavior

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book highlights the obstacles to and potential for a just transformation as a way out of the current climate crisis. This volume examines the barriers, opportunities and incentives around the pursuit of climate-just behavior, based on a comprehensive interdisciplinary and integrative analysis. It investigates how the gap between expressing concern about the climate crisis and giving it a high priority within the context of everyday behavior can be overcome. At the same time, it looks at the challenging politico-economic framework conditions such as the strong economic growth and profit orientation of capitalism. Although justice is a fundamental human motive, which should induce climate-just behavior, system justification is common and makes people rather justify their unjust behavior. In this book, a general and systemic framework on human behavior is provided, including internal factors, such as knowledge and psychological needs, external factors, such as socio-cultural and politico-economic factors, feedback loops and interactions. The authors draw on multiple theories to examine how denial and moral disengagement affect individual responsibility, despite real-world evidence of the climate crisis. The book highlights the role of emotions in encouraging a pro-environmental response and discusses solutions on both the individual and the collective level, such as transparency laws. Moreover, making climate-friendly options more accessible, affordable and convenient facilitates behavior change more effectively. Overall, this book presents knowledge-based, realistic approaches to surmounting these obstacles in order to achieve a more climate-just world. Climate-Just Behavior will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change, climate justice, environmental geography and environmental psychology.

Meat Inspection And Control In The Slaughterhouse

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

MEAT INSPECTION AND CONTROL IN THE SLAUGHTER HOUSE Meat inspection, meat hygiene and official control tasks in the slaughterhouse have always been of major importance in the meat industry and are intimately related to animal diseases and animal welfare. Huge steps have been taken over more than a century to prevent the transmission of pathogenic organisms and contagious diseases from animals to humans. Various factors influence the quality and safety of meat, including public health hazards (zoonotic pathogens, chemical substances and veterinary drugs) and animal health and welfare issues during transport and slaughter. Meat inspection is one of the most important programmes in improving food safety and its scope has enlarged considerably in recent decades. Globalization has affected the complexity of the modern meat chain and has provided possibilities for food frauds and unfair competition. During the last two decades many food fraud cases have been reported that have caused concern among consumers and the industry. Subsequently, meat inspection has been faced with new challenges. Meat Inspection and Control in the Slaughterhouse is an up-to-date reference book that responds to these changes and reflects the continued importance of meat inspection for the food industry. The contributors to this book are all international experts in the areas of meat inspection and the official controls limited to slaughterhouses, providing a rare insight into the international meat trade. This book will be of importance to students, professionals and members of the research community worldwide who aim to improve standards of meat inspection procedures and food safety.

Communities Of Fate

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Risk is always present; only the probabilities of risk vary. Communities of Fate offers an opportunity to deepen our understanding of the social origins and organization of risk. By emphasizing the social aspects of risk and illustrating the range of circumstances in which risk is not only socially defined but socially created, the author helps demonstrate the extent to which reducing risk is not a technical problem, but, within Habermas' framework, a practical one. In short, how do we encourage all people, including those predisposed to technical solutions, to appreciate the extent to which risk is socially constructed and, thus, to join the socio-political struggle to reduce it where that is possible? Contents: Introduction; Theoretical Frameworks-The Classical Statements; Theoretical Frameworks-The Contemporary Statements; Empirical Case Studies of Risk; Policy Implications.

Animal Rights

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In the past decade, philosopher Bernard Rollin points out, we have "witnessed a major revolution in social concern with animal welfare and the moral status of animals." Adopting the stance of a moderate, Harold Guither attempts to provide an unbiased examination of the paths and goals of the members of the animal rights movement and of its detractors. Given the level of confusion, suspicion, misunderstanding, and mistrust between the two sides, Guither admits the difficulty in locating, much less staying in, the middle of the road. The philosophical conflict, however, is fairly clear: those who resist reform, fearing that radical change in the treatment of animals will infringe on their business and property rights, versus the new activists who espouse a different set of moral and ethical obligations toward animals. From his position as a moderate, Guither presents a brief history of animal protection and the emergence of animal rights, describes the scope of the movement, and identifies major players such as Paul and Linda McCartney and organizations such as People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals that are actively involved in the movement. He concentrates on what is actually happening in the 1990s, discussing in detail the possible consequences of the current debate for those who own, use, or enjoy animals in entertainment and leisure pursuits. A reference work for students in animal sciences and veterinary medicine, the book also poses questions for philosophers, sociologists, and public policymakers as well as animal owners, animal and biomedical researchers, and manufacturers and distributors of animal equipment and supplies.
