BOOK EXCERPT:
Publishing, Editing, and Reception is a collection of twelve essays honoring Professor Donald H. Reiman, who moved to the University of Delaware in 1992. The essays, written by friends, students, and collaborators, reflect the scholarly interests that defined Reiman’s long career. Mirroring the focus of Reiman’s work during his years at Carl H. Pforzheimer Library in New York and as lead editor of Shelley and his Circle, 1773–1822 (Harvard University Press), the essays in this collection explore authors such as Mary Shelley, William Hazlitt, Lord Byron and Percy Bysshe Shelley; moreover, they confirm the continuing influence of Reiman’s writings in the fields of editing and British Romanticism. Ranging from topics such as Byron’s relationship with his publisher John Murray and the reading practices in the Shelley circle to Rudyard Kipling’s response to Shelley’s politics, these essays draw on a dazzling variety of published and manuscript sources while engaging directly with many of Reiman’s most influential theories and arguments.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Museum and Gallery Publishing examines the theory and practice of general and scholarly publishing associated with museum and art gallery collections. Focusing on the production and reception of these texts, the book explains the relevance of publishing to the cultural, commercial and social contexts of collections and their institutions. Combining theory with case studies from around the world, Sarah Anne Hughes explores how, why and to what effect museums and galleries publish books. Covering a broad range of publishing formats and organisations, including heritage sites, libraries and temporary exhibitions, the book argues that the production and consumption of printed media within the context of collecting institutions occupies a unique and privileged role in the creation and communication of knowledge. Acknowledging that books offer functions beyond communication, Hughes argues that this places books published by museums in a unique relationship to institutions, with staff acting as producers and visitors as consumers. The logistical and ethical dimensions of museum and gallery publishing are also examined in depth, including consideration of issues such as production, the impact of digital technologies, funding and sponsorship, marketing, co-publishing, rights, and curators’ and artists’ agency. Focusing on an important but hitherto neglected topic, Museum and Gallery Publishing is key reading for researchers in the fields of museum, heritage, art and publishing studies. It will also be of interest to curators and other practitioners working in museums, heritage and science centres and art galleries.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Woolf Editing / Editing Woolf focuses on Woolf as editor both of her own work and of the Hogarth Press, and on editing Woolf—on the conflation of textual and theoretical criticism of Woolf’s oeuvre. Since many contributors are editors, creative writers, and critics, contributions highlight the intersections of those three roles. The essays variously addressed the “granite” of close textual reading and the “rainbow” of theoretical approaches to Woolf’s writings. Several more flexible versions of editing emerge in the papers that discuss adaptations of Woolf to film, theatre, and music. Brenda Silver’s contribution in memory of Julia Briggs opens the volume, and James Haule’s contribution concludes it.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Eminent scholars discuss the politics and practices of generating scholarship in rhetoric and composition studies. Publishing in Rhetoric and Composition is a collection of essays about the politics and practices of generating scholarship in rhetoric and composition. The contributors to this book, many of whom are current or past editors of the discipline's most prestigious scholarly journals, undoubtedly have their finger on the pulse of composition's most current scholarship and offer invaluable insight into the production and publication of original research. They discuss publishing articles and reviews, as well as book-length projects, including scholarly monographs, edited collections, and textbooks. They also address such topics as how composition research is valued in English departments, recent developments in electronic publishing, the work habits of successful academic writers, and the complications of mentoring graduate students in a publish-or-perish profession. An inviting and helpful tone makes this an ideal textbook for research methodology and professional writing courses.
