Extremely popular and prolific in the 1930s and 1940s, Cornell Woolrich still has diehard fans who thrive on his densely packed descriptions and his spellbinding premises. A contemporary of Hammett and Chandler, he competed with them for notoriety in the pulps and became the single most adapted writer for films of the noir period. Perhaps the most famous film adaptation of a Woolrich story is Alfred Hitchcock's Rear Window (1954). Even today, his work is still onscreen; Michael Cristofer's Original Sin (2001) is based on one of his tales. This book offers a detailed analysis of many of Woolrich's novels and short stories; examines films adapted from these works; and shows how Woolrich's techniques and themes influenced the noir genre. On account of rather serious losses in stored wood and wood pulp, the authors made a study of the causes of decay in wood and wood pulp and conditions which favor it, complete with mill tests, and laboratory investigations. To combat deterioration during storage, careful attention must be given to the elimination of sources of infection, and the chemicals best adapted for this are identified, and an application scheme outlined. The authors investigate fungi that inhabit pulp, which do more damage than molds, and cause certain chemical actions on ground-wood pulp. It is undoubtedly the most extensive discussion that has yet been published on this subject; the authors and the Forest Products Laboratory deserve sincere thanks.

This book provides a detailed update on our knowledge of dental pulp and regenerative approaches to therapy. It is divided into three parts. The pulp components are first described, covering pulp cells, extracellular matrix, vascularization and innervation as well as pulp development and aging. One of the reasons the pulp is of such interest is that it not only provides the vitality to the teeth but also produces the dentine - both the primary and secondary, as well as reparative. The latter-type dentine is a result of the pulp's functions in response to disease as the former dentine is in response to health. As an example, some investigators have reported the effects of cutting of dentine and the placement of restorations in dentine which in turn reflect changes on the pulp tissue. These reports have raised a number of questions, which in turn have created a need for answers.
