BOOK EXCERPT:
This thesis develops novel numerical techniques for simulating quantum transport in the time domain and applies them to pertinent physical systems such as flying qubits in electronic interferometers and superconductor/semiconductor junctions hosting Majorana bound states (the key ingredient for topological quantum computing). In addition to exploring the rich new physics brought about by time dependence, the thesis also develops software that can be used to simulate nanoelectronic systems with arbitrary geometry and time dependence, offering a veritable toolbox for exploring this rapidly growing domain.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Primary goal of this book is to provide a cohesive description of the vast field of semiconductor quantum devices, with special emphasis on basic quantum-mechanical phenomena governing the electro-optical response of new-generation nanomaterials. The book will cover within a common language different types of optoelectronic nanodevices, including quantum-cascade laser sources and detectors, few-electron/exciton quantum devices, and semiconductor-based quantum logic gates. The distinguishing feature of the present volume is a unified microscopic treatment of quantum-transport and coherent-optics phenomena on ultrasmall space- and time-scales, as well as of their semiclassical counterparts.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Quantum and chaos, key concepts in contemporary science, are incompatible by nature. This volume presents an investigation into quantum transport in mesoscopic or nanoscale systems which are classically chaotic and shows the success and failure of quantal, semiclassical, and random matrix theories in dealing with questions emerging from the mesoscopic cosmos. These traditional theories are critically analysed, and this leads to a new direction. To reconcile quantum with chaos and to restore genuine temporal chaos in quantum systems, a time-discrete variant of quantum dynamics is proposed. Audience:This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in physics, chemistry and mathematics, whose work involves fundamental questions of quantum mechanics in chaotic systems.

BOOK EXCERPT:
VLSI devices downscaling is a very significant part of the design to improve the performance of VLSI industry outcomes, which results in high speed and low power of operation of integrated devices. The increasing use of VLSI circuits dealing with highly sensitive information, such as healthcare information, means adequate security measures are required to be taken for the secure storage and transmission. Advanced Circuits and Systems for Healthcare and Security Applications provides broader coverage of the basic aspects of advanced circuits and security and introduces the corresponding principles. By the end of this book, you will be familiarized with the theoretical frameworks, technical methodologies, and empirical research findings in the field to protect your computers and information from adversaries. Advanced circuits and the comprehensive material of this book will keep you interested and involved throughout. The book is an integrated source which aims at understanding the basic concepts associated with the security of the advanced circuits and the cyber world as a first step towards achieving high-end protection from adversaries and hackers. The content includes theoretical frameworks and recent empirical findings in the field to understand the associated principles, key challenges and recent real-time applications of the advanced circuits and cybersecurity. It illustrates the notions, models, and terminologies that are widely used in the area of circuits and security, identifies the existing security issues in the field, and evaluates the underlying factors that influence the security of the systems. It emphasizes the idea of understanding the motivation of the attackers to establish adequate security measures and to mitigate security attacks in a better way. This book also outlines the exciting areas of future research where the already-existing methodologies can be implemented. Moreover, this book is suitable for students, researchers, and professionals in the who are looking forward to carry out research in the field of advanced circuits and systems for healthcare and security applications; faculty members across universities; and software developers.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book presents the current views of leading physicists on the bizarre property of quantum theory: nonlocality. Einstein viewed this theory as “spooky action at a distance” which, together with randomness, resulted in him being unable to accept quantum theory. The contributions in the book describe, in detail, the bizarre aspects of nonlocality, such as Einstein–Podolsky–Rosen steering and quantum teleportation—a phenomenon which cannot be explained in the framework of classical physics, due its foundations in quantum entanglement. The contributions describe the role of nonlocality in the rapidly developing field of quantum information. Nonlocal quantum effects in various systems, from solid-state quantum devices to organic molecules in proteins, are discussed. The most surprising papers in this book challenge the concept of the nonlocality of Nature, and look for possible modifications, extensions, and new formulations—from retrocausality to novel types of multiple-world theories. These attempts have not yet been fully successful, but they provide hope for modifying quantum theory according to Einstein’s vision.
