For more than a century, quantum mechanics has served as a very powerful theory that has expanded physics and technology far beyond their classical limits, yet it has also produced some of the most difficult paradoxes known to the human mind. This book represents the combined efforts of sixteen of today's most eminent theoretical physicists to lay out future directions for quantum physics. The authors include Yakir Aharonov, Anton Zeilinger; the Nobel laureates Anthony Leggett and Geradus 't Hooft; Basil Hiley, Lee Smolin and Henry Stapp. Following a foreword by Roger Penrose, the individual chapters address questions such as quantum non-locality, the measurement problem, quantum insights into relativity, cosmology and thermodynamics, and the possible bearing of quantum phenomena on biology and consciousness.

Each contribution is an article in itself, and great effort has been made by the authors to be lucid and not too technical. A few brief highlights of the round-table discussions are given between the chapters. All papers have been peer reviewed. This was the 4th conference arranged by ICMM on probabilistic foundations of classical and quantum physics. The first three conferences took place in 2000, 2002, and 2004. Some closely related conferences are Bohmian Mechanics 2000 and Quantum Theory: Reconsideration of Foundations 2001, 2003, and 2005. The main aim of these conferences is to understand the role that probability plays in the foundations of physics, theoretical as well as experimental, classical as well as quantum. In this conference, as well as during our previous conferences, we are glad to welcome a fruitful assembly of theoretical physicists, experimenters, mathematicians, and even philosophers interested in the foundations of probability and physics. Among important topics discussed during the conference were the probabilistic foundations of quantum mechanics, as well as the foundations of probability itself, the formation theory, quantum computing, quantum cryptography, quantum teleportation, quantum fluctuations in relation with stochastic electrodynamics, Bohmian mechanics, measurement theory, completeness and incompleteness of quantum mechanics, macroscopic quantum systems, experiments on quantum nonlocality and locality, Bell's inequality, entanglement; philosophical problems raised by quantum mechanics, and mathematical formalism. A special session devoted to the Bayesain approach to classical and quantum probability was organized.

This Växjö conference was devoted to the reconsideration of quantum foundations. Due to increasing research in quantum information theory, especially on quantum computing and cryptography, many questions regarding the foundations of quantum mechanics, which have long been considered to be exclusively of philosophical interest, nowadays play an important role in theoretical and experimental quantum physics.

Traditional causation posits that the past alone influences the present. In principle, however, the basic laws of physics permit the future an equal measure of influence: retrocausation. This symposium explores theoretical developments and experimental evidence for retrocausation. It is unique in stressing recent experiments in this exciting and potentially important new field.
