Difficult as it is for some to imagine what people relied on for home entertainment in the evening before television--it was that equally big medium, radio. Its programs were the precursors to the popular television sitcoms and dramas of today. This work provides two main kinds of information: month-by-month prime time (7pm to 11pm) schedules from January 1929 through July 1961, for all national broadcasting networks, and a detailed listing of all network programming moves (from July 1926 until August 1967), including series premieres, cancellations, and time slot moves, plus a yearly recap of key programming moves. Only regularly scheduled series are included. Single event or special programming is not included. The book is divided into seven chapters, one for each night of the week; each chapter consists of individual month-by-month prime time schedules for each network followed by a detailed chronological listing of each of that network's series and programming moves.

Once a lively presence on radio, jazz now finds itself relegated to satellite broadcasters and low-watt stations at the edge of the dial. Aaron J. Johnson examines jazz radio from the advent of Black radio in 1948 to its near extinction from the commercial dial after 1980. Even in jazz’s heyday, programmers and DJs excluded many styles and artists, and Johnson delves into how the politics of decision-making and the political uses of the medium shaped jazz radio formats. Johnson shows radio’s role in the contradictory perceptions of jazz as American’s model artistic contribution to the world, as Black classical music, and as the soundtrack of African American rebellion and resistance for much of the twentieth century. Literature, images, and metaphor are often where most of a nation’s history are embedded. A study of modern Kurdish literature highlights a fealty to a rich literary past and a rich source of historiography. The articles in this volume address many facets of the literary in the Kurdish world: proverbs, feminist literature, and resistance in literary works, poetry, prose, etc. In the end, the volume offers a general paradigm of the complex literary framework of the Kurds, their continuous resistance for nationhood in their history, and their modern reinventing of the self.
