Radio In The Movies

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This richly detailed examination of two branches of American entertainment focuses on the various ways that radio stations and air personalities have been depicted in motion pictures, from 1926's The Radio Detective to more recent films like 2006's A Prairie Home Companion. Cinematic portrayals of various aspects of radio are covered, including disc jockeys, sports broadcasts, religious programs, and the talk-radio format. Such films as The Big Broadcast (1932), Reveille with Beverly (1943), Mister Rock and Roll (1957), WUSA (1970), Radio Days (1987) and Private Parts (1997) provide fascinating insights not only into their own times, but also into the historical eras that some of these films have endeavored to recreate. A chronological filmography of more than 600 titles is included.

Radio Relations

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume gathers together revised versions of the papers presented at the ECREA Radio Research Section Conference held in Lublin, Poland, in September 2017. The book highlights what radio actually is – a medium created to connect different places at a distance. Subtle but pervasive, simple but graceful, radio builds affective relations, either between listeners and the world or between listeners themselves. The word “relations” is plural. It suggests the idea that radio is both an economic activity – related to technology, production, working routines and business – and a cultural industry – related to aesthetics, art, social interaction, education and politics. Since relations are relevantly human, we can explore how radio appeals to personal commitment and can reinforce a sense of community too. The unique value of this book lies both in erudite essays of Seán Street and Enrico Menduni, world-famous figures of radio research, and in perspectives sketched by brilliant young radio practitioners and researchers. The diverse views on radio communications from authors across the different regions of the world including Brazil, Canada, Italy, Poland, France, Hungary, Spain and the UK collected here will certainly inspire radio researchers, media historians, sociologists and journalism students.

Encyclopedia Of Politics The Media And Popular Culture

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Whether it's television, radio, concerts, live appearances by comedians, Internet websites, or even the political party conventions themselves, the mixing of politics and popular culture is frequently on display. The Encyclopedia of Politics, the Media, and Popular Culture examines the people, major events, media, and controversies in eight thematic chapters and over 150 entries to provide an invaluable resource for any student, scholar, or everyday political junkie needing a comprehensive introduction to the subject. On a typical weeknight in the United States, millions shun the traditional evening network news broadcasts and, instead, later grab their remotes to turn to Comedy Central to catch up on the political happenings of the day, delivered by the comedian Jon Stewart on the faux news program, The Daily Show. Immediately afterwards, they might stay tuned to The Colbert Report for another dosage of hilarious, fake news that, to them, comes across more honestly than the serious version they could watch on CNN. Whether it's television, radio, concerts, live appearances by comedians, Internet websites, or even the political party conventions themselves, the mixing of politics and popular culture is frequently on display. The Encyclopedia of Politics, the Media, and Popular Culture provides in-depth coverage of these fascinating, and often surprising intersections in both historical and contemporary culture. This highly readable and entertaining encyclopedia provides a sweeping survey of the historic and ongoing interplay between politics, the media, and popular culture in eight thought-provoking chapters. The volume is enhanced with the inclusion of over 150 entries to help students and researchers easily locate more in-depth information on topics ranging from political scandals to YouTube.

Radio Network Prime Time Programming 1926 1967

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Difficult as it is for some to imagine what people relied on for home entertainment in the evening before television--it was that equally big medium, radio. Its programs were the precursors to the popular television sitcoms and dramas of today. This work provides two main kinds of information: month-by-month prime time (7pm to 11pm) schedules from January 1929 through July 1961, for all national broadcasting networks, and a detailed listing of all network programming moves (from July 1926 until August 1967), including series premieres, cancellations, and time slot moves, plus a yearly recap of key programming moves. Only regularly scheduled series are included. Single event or special programming is not included. The book is divided into seven chapters, one for each night of the week; each chapter consists of individual month-by-month prime time schedules for each network followed by a detailed chronological listing of each of that network's series and programming moves.

Jazz Radio America

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Once a lively presence on radio, jazz now finds itself relegated to satellite broadcasters and low-watt stations at the edge of the dial. Aaron J. Johnson examines jazz radio from the advent of Black radio in 1948 to its near extinction from the commercial dial after 1980. Even in jazz’s heyday, programmers and DJs excluded many styles and artists, and Johnson delves into how the politics of decision-making and the political uses of the medium shaped jazz radio formats. Johnson shows radio’s role in the contradictory perceptions of jazz as American’s model artistic contribution to the world, as Black classical music, and as the soundtrack of African American rebellion and resistance for much of the twentieth century. An interwoven story of a music and a medium, Jazz Radio America answers perennial questions about why certain kinds of jazz get played and why even that music is played in so few places.

Radio And Social Transformation In China

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The first systematic, comprehensive and critical English-language study of radio in China, this book documents a historical understanding of Chinese radio from the early twentieth century to the present. Covering both public matters and private lives, Radio and Social Transformation in China analyses a range of themes from healthcare, migration and education, to intimacy, family and friendship. Through a concentrated and thorough scrutiny of a variety of new genres and radio practices in post-Mao China, it also investigates the interaction between radio and social change, particularly in the era of economic reform. Building on the core theoretical concept of ‘compressed modernity’, each of the radio genres explored is shown to embody China’s efforts to achieve modernity, while simultaneously exemplifying radio’s capacity to manage the challenges that have arisen from the country’s distinctive and perhaps unique process of modernization. Written in an engaging style, this book makes an important contribution to radio history internationally. As such, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of broadcast media, radio and Communication Studies, as well as Chinese culture and society.

Essays On Modern Kurdish Literature

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Literature, images, and metaphor are often where most of a nation’s history are embedded. A study of modern Kurdish literature highlights a fealty to a rich literary past and a rich source of historiography. The articles in this volume address many facets of the literary in the Kurdish world: proverbs, feminist literature, and resistance in literary works, poetry, prose, etc. In the end, the volume offers a general paradigm of the complex literary framework of the Kurds, their continuous resistance for nationhood in their history, and their modern reinventing of the self. An overview of some of the works in modern Kurdish literature points to both asymmetry and commonality in comparative literary studies. These works highight the thematic reach in Kurdish literary studies.
