RAF Coastal Command was founded as a formation within the Royal Air Force in 1936, at a time when the RAF was restricted into Fighter, Bomber and Coastal Commands.

During the war, Canadian squadrons flew hundreds of operations over the North Atlantic, the English Channel, the North Sea and the Bay of Biscay. Such operations included reconnaissance flights as well as shipping strikes to Norway, the Netherlands and the French coast. From a force of some 4,000 officers and airmen and 270 aircraft at the beginning of the war, the RCAF had within four months doubled in strength, with 8,287 officers and airmen, and 14 operational squadrons in Canada.
