The Global Report series monitors the implementation of the 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions, as well as progress towards achieving the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, within and with the cultural and creative sectors. Its 2022 edition revolves around two major questions: What is the state of the cultural and creative sectors? What policy changes to promote sustainable, human rights-based systems of governance for culture and equitable access to cultural opportunities and resources have resulted from stakeholders' implementation and ownership of the Convention? In line with the 2015 and 2018 editions, this third edition of the Report presents the latest policy developments to support creativity and sheds light on current and future challenges in areas such as the digital environment, media diversity, sustainable development, mobility of artists and cultural professionals, gender equality and artistic freedom.

Anniversaries are a time for reflection and planning. The 10th anniversary of the UNESCO 2005 Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions provides its Parties and non governmental stakeholders with a significant opportunity to recall its origins, critically review the achievements and, on this basis, form an ambition for the implementation of the Convention for the next ten, twenty, even thirty years. One of the questions asked during this anniversary year is whether or not the implementation of the Convention reflects the vision of its authors. In other words, has it led to the positive changes its drafters envisaged? What steps have been taken to reach the four main goals of the Convention: support sustainable systems of governance for culture; achieve a balanced flow of cultural goods and services and increase the mobility of artists and cultural professionals; integrate culture in sustainable development frameworks; and promote human rights and fundamental freedoms. This new Global Report series presents evidence on the implementation of the Convention goals, with a proposed set of indicators to monitor change and progress over time. Based on the quadrennial periodic reports submitted so far by Parties, as well as other sources, this maiden edition is a first effort to take stock and share information on the challenges encountered, in particular in emerging policy areas, such as digital, public service media, preferential treatment as well as gender and artistic freedom. It investigates how cultural policies may have been re-shaped as a result of efforts to implement the Convention. This Report is also intended to provide evidence for the implementation of the United Nations 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

The first book dedicated specifically to research methods in the political economy of media and communication, it provides a methodological toolkit to investigate the functioning of media, technology, and cultural industries in their historical, institutional, structural, and systemic contexts. Bringing together key insights from expert legal and heritage academics and practitioners, this book explores the existence and safeguarding of contemporary forms of intangible cultural heritage (ICH). Providing a detailed analysis of the international legal frameworks relevant to ICH, the contributing authors then go on to challenge the pervasive view that heritage is about ‘old’ tangible objects by highlighting the existence, role and importance of contemporary forms of ICH to modern society.

This book focuses on the cultural and intellectual activities of Kurdish migrant women through artistic and aesthetic forms of production in Belgium, France, Germany, Sweden and the UK. Using in-depth interviews with over 40 Kurdish women artists, Ozlem Galip examines how artistic, literary and cultural productions, incorporating the fields of film, theatre and music, are articulated within the structures of nation states, leading to the interrogation of the impact of western and local knowledge, patriarchy, the nation-state and globalisation. Galip also analyses how European policies affect the development of cultural engagement of Kurdish migrant women, and how such engagements help these women to integrate into European society. Examining the gendered experiences of diaspora from all four regions of Kurdistan; Iraq, Iran, Syria and Turkey, this book challenges ideas about gender, migration and art through the lens of women artistic production with a focus on women-led activism and the changing integration and migration policies of Europe.
