Rapid urbanization and globalization processes worldwide have changed the landscape of our times. In Asia and Africa the number of urban dwellers increases by an average of one million per week, according to the United Nations. More than half of the globe’s seven billion human beings now live in cities. These realities have far reaching implications for mission in urban contexts at the start of the third millennium. Reaching the City: Reflections on Urban Mission for the Twenty-first Century seeks to address the missiological challenges associated with this new world order. Each author in this collection respectfully builds upon the significant contributions of seminal writers such as Ray Bakke, Jacques Ellul, Basil of Caesarea and others, while making new and creative proposals for urban mission in our world today. Beginning with the bigger picture of the global challenges of urbanization, and moving through theological, historical, and educational perspectives, this volume concludes with a rich bevy of case studies engaging these new realities of both North American and international cities to encourage a missional thrust to reach these communities.

After more than three years of grim fighting, General Ulysses Grant had a plan to end the Civil War--laying siege to Petersburg, Virginia, thus cutting off supplies to the Confederate capital at Richmond. He established his headquarters at City Point on the James River, requiring thousands of troops, tons of supplies, as well as extensive medical facilities and staff. Nurses flooded the area, yet many did not work in medical capacities--they served as organizers, advocates and intelligence gatherers. Nursing emerged as a noble profession with multiple specialties. Drawing on a range of primary and secondary sources, this history covers the resilient women who opened the way for others into postwar medical, professional and political arenas.

The report presents information developed in the course of a multi-year investigation of the need for shore protection and storm damage reduction. The study area was 8.6 miles of the Pacific coast, known as Ocean Beach, in the City of San Francisco, CA. The study area extended from Cliff House to Fort Funston. The beach portion of the study area is in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, under the jurisdiction of the National Park Service. Facilities threatened with damage included the Great Highway, parking lots of the GGNRA, a buried storm and sewer water transport box, a sewer pumping plant and ultimately houses and businesses. The report records the Ocean Engineering, Economic, and Geotechnical studies used to formulate and analyze a variety of alternative measures, including structural seawalls and revetments, as well as beach and dune nourishment. The final analysis indicated that most of the study area, while not absolutely safe, had a low probability of erosion. In the one area with a possible federal interest, the sponsor was unable to agree to cost share at the time of the report. Therefore the study was terminated. The sponsor will pursue other measures not requiring federal cost sharing.

This report discusses the framework conditions for effective city-to-city partnerships and takes stock of existing monitoring and evaluation mechanisms.
