Realization And Modelling In System Theory

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This volume is the first of the three volume publication containing the proceedings of the 1989 International Symposium on the Mathematical Theory of Networks and Systems (MTNS-89), which was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, June 19-23, 1989. The International Symposia MTNS focus attention on problems from system and control theory, circuit theory and signal processing, which, in general, require application of sophisticated mathematical tools, such as from function and operator theory, linear algebra and matrix theory, differential and algebraic geometry. The interaction between advanced mathematical methods and practical engineering problems of circuits, systems and control, which is typical for MTNS, turns out to be most effective and is, as these proceedings show, a continuing source of exciting advances. The first volume contains invited papers and a large selection of other symposium presentations on the general theory of deterministic and stochastic systems with an emphasis on realization and modelling. A wide variety of recent results on approximate realization and system identification, stochastic dynamical systems, discrete event systems,- o systems, singular systems and nonstandard models IS presented. Preface vi Also a few papers on applications in hydrology and hydraulics are included. The titles of the two other volumes are: Robust Control of Linear Sys tems and Nonlinear Control (volume 2) and Signal Processing. Scatter ing and Operator Theory. and Numerical Methods (volume 3). The Editors are most grateful to the about 300 reviewers for their help in the refereeing process. The Editors thank Ms. G. Bijleveld and Ms.

Linear System Theory

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The state space approach is widely used in systems ranging from industrial robots to space guidance control. This landmark in the technique's development and applications was written by two pioneers in the field, Lotfi A. Zadeh and Charles A. Desoer, who teach in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of California, Berkeley. Starting with a self-contained introduction to system theory, the authors explain basic concepts, presenting each idea within a carefully integrated framework of numerous illustrative examples. Most of the text concerns the application of the state space approach to systems described by differential equations. Problems of stability and controllability receive particular attention, and connections between the state space approach and classical techniques are highlighted. The properties of transfer functions are covered in separate chapters. Extensive appendixes feature complete and self-contained expositions of delta-functions and distributions, the Laplace and Fourier transform theory, the theory of infinite dimensional linear vector spaces, and functions of a matrix.

Mathematical System Theory

BOOK EXCERPT:

Over the past three decades R.E. Kalman has been one of the most influential personalities in system and control theory. His ideas have been instrumental in a variety of areas. This is a Festschrift honoring his 60th birthday. It contains contributions from leading researchers in the field giving an account of the profound influence of his ideas in a number of areas of active research in system and control theory. For example, since their introduction by Kalman in the early 60's, the concepts of controllability and observability of dynamical systems with inputs, have been the corner stone of the great majority of investigations in the field.

Trends And Progress In System Identification

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Trends and Progress in System Identification is a three-part book that focuses on model considerations, identification methods, and experimental conditions involved in system identification. Organized into 10 chapters, this book begins with a discussion of model method in system identification, citing four examples differing on the nature of the models involved, the nature of the fields, and their goals. Subsequent chapters describe the most important aspects of model theory; the ""classical"" methods and time series estimation; application of least squares and related techniques for the estimation of dynamic system parameters; the maximum likelihood and error prediction methods; and the modern development of statistical methods. Non-parametric approaches, identification of nonlinear systems by piecewise approximation, and the minimax identification are then explained. Other chapters explore the Bayesian approach to system identification; choice of input signals; and choice and effect of different feedback configurations in system identification. This book will be useful for control engineers, system scientists, biologists, and members of other disciplines dealing withdynamical relations.

Systems Models And Feedback Theory And Applications

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

It is a great honor and privilege to have this opportunity of celebrating the 65th birthday of Professor Antonio Ruberti by holding an International Conference on Systems, Models and Feedback. The conference, and this volume which contains its proceedings, is a tribute to Professor Ruberti in acknowledgement of his major contributions to System Theory, at a time in which this area was emerging and consolidat ing as an independent discipline, his role as a leader of the Italian academic community, his activity in promoting and fostering close scientific relations between Italian and U.S. scholars in Systems and Control. The format of this conference is inspired by a series of seminars initi ated exactly twenty years ago under the direction of Professor Ruberti, in Italy, and Professor R. R. Mohler, in the U.S. By bringing together many authoritative talents from both countries, these seminars were instrumental in promoting the expansion of System Theory in new areas, notably that of Nonlinear Control, and were the key to successful scientific careers for many of the younger attendants.

System Theoretic Methods In Economic Modelling Ii

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

System-Theoretic Methods in Economic Modelling II complements the editor's earlier volume, bringing together current research efforts integrating system-theoretic concepts with economic modelling processes. The range of papers presented here goes beyond the long-accepted control-theoretic contributions in dynamic optimization and focuses on system-theoretic methods in the construction as well as the application stages of economic modelling. This volume initiates new and intensifies existing debate between researchers and practitioners within and across the disciplines involved, with the objective of encouraging interdisciplinary research. The papers are split into four sections - estimation, filtering and smoothing problems in the context of state space modelling; applying the state space concept to financial modelling; modelling rational expectation; and a miscellaneous section including a follow-up case study by Tse and Khilnani on their integrated system model for a fishery management process, which featured in the first volume.
