BOOK EXCERPT:
Jonah wished God would destroy Nineveh and the entire Assyria without preaching to them. Every Israelite felt the same way. Most times, if we are careless; our opinion is allowed to interfere in divine plan and program. And since God's plans would never change, the strongest possibility is that we lose our position with God. You need to read Dr. Olowosoyo's analysis of the book of Jonah.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Prejudiced, petulant, resentful, sulky: Jonah was not just a reluctant spokesman for God, he was also a disobedient one. The story of Jonah shows how God calls and uses those who are far from perfect. As Christians, we are all called to respond in some way to God ́s prompting. This study of the book of Jonah challenges us to do just that.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In this new and refreshing approach to the story, Ben Zvi starts with the premise that Jonah, like most books, was written to be read. He therefore concentrates on intended and unintended readership(s) of Jonah and the network of messages that they were likely to derive through their reading and rereading. He starts with the historical and social matrix of the production and reading of the book in antiquity, analyzes its self-critical approach and its metaprophetic character as a comment on the genre of prophetic books and on prophets. How does the historical fact of Nineveh's destruction acually shape the reading? Or the perception of Jonah as a runaway slave?Ben Zvi demonstrates the malleability of interpretation of the Book of Jonah and its limitations, as attested in different communities of readers. He asks why certain messages are easily accepted by particular historical communities, whereas others are not raised at all.

BOOK EXCERPT:
David Wilson’s initial research into the phenomenon of prophecy in the Hebrew Bible suggested that many of the passages featuring prophets, and hitherto considered to be bizarre myths (or much-edited collections of traditions) were, in fact, sequences of dreams. Moreover, it was possible to compare the structure of these sequences with the structure of a night’s sleep (hypnogram)—as revealed by modern sleep research—to demonstrate that the “sleeper” was depressed. This characteristic, depressive sleep architecture was then used to show that three characters in particular, Elijah, Jonah, and Adam—compared in the New Testament with Jesus—were all, in fact, depressed. Quite naturally, this raised further questions concerning the nature of Jesus himself: Was he merely a prophet? If he wasn’t, how did he differ? If he was depressed, how was he able to function (and succeed in his mission) when Elijah and Jonah clearly had such great difficulties? These and other questions are raised throughout this book, and many of them are not new, but they are, however, changed forever when asked against a contextual background of altered states of consciousness (ASCs), and dreamform in particular.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In this volume, Frank Macchia offers a systematic theology written with Christ’s outpouring of the Holy Spirit from the heavenly Father at Pentecost as its dominant motif. Christ’s death and resurrection provide for our reconciliation with God and make way for the Spirit, for the divine overflowing onto all flesh. The church is born in the grace of that overflowing. From the abundance of this divine self-giving spring forth many different tongues aflame with the church’s praise and witness. This systematic theology seeks to join and further guide these tongues in their diverse contexts by reflecting in a coherent fashion across the spectrum of Christian doctrine. The first three chapters offer an extensive treatment of modern approaches to theology. Subsequent chapters explore all of the major topics of importance to theology historically. This is theology written from a Pentecostal interest, yet seeking to speak beyond it to a larger ecumenical horizon.
