BOOK EXCERPT:
Integral equations are functional equations in which an unknown function appears under an integral sign. This can involve aspects of function theory and their integral transforms when the unknown function appears with a functional non-degenerated kernel under the integral sign. The close relation between differential and integral equations does that in some functional analysis, and function theory problems may be formulated either way. This book establishes the fundamentals of integral equations and considers some deep research aspects on integral equations of first and second kind, operator theory applied to integral equations, methods to solve some nonlinear integral equations, and singular integral equations, among other things. This is the first volume on this theme, hoping that other volumes of this important functional analysis theme and operator theory to formal functional equations will be realized in the future.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book contains 25 papers, most of which were presented, for the first time, at the International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications held in Groningen, the Netherlands, from June 30-July 3, 1998. The topics include dilation and interpolation problems, reproducing kernel spaces, numerical ranges of operators, Riccati equations, harmonic analysis, spectral theory of differential operators and analytic operator functions to scattering of waves. All papers deal with operators in Banach or Hilbert spaces, or in spaces with an indefinite metric. This volume is dedicated to Israel Gohberg, one of the founding fathers of the IWOTA worskhops and an outstanding leader in operator theory. His work had a deep influence on the field and its range of applications. The IWOTA Groningen 1998, the tenth in its series, was a good occasion for a pre-celebration of his 70th birthday. This book also contains the speeches held at the workshop dinner, a review of Israel Gohberg's contributions to mathematics and a complete list of his publications. The book is of interest to a wide audience of pure and applied mathematicians.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Harmonic and biharmonic boundary value problems (BVP) arising in physical situations in fluid mechanics are, in general, intractable by analytic techniques. In the last decade there has been a rapid increase in the application of integral equation techniques for the numerical solution of such problems [1,2,3]. One such method is the boundary integral equation method (BIE) which is based on Green's Formula [4] and enables one to reformulate certain BVP as integral equations. The reformulation has the effect of reducing the dimension of the problem by one. Because discretisation occurs only on the boundary in the BIE the system of equations generated by a BIE is considerably smaller than that generated by an equivalent finite difference (FD) or finite element (FE) approximation [5]. Application of the BIE in the field of fluid mechanics has in the past been limited almost entirely to the solution of harmonic problems concerning potential flows around selected geometries [3,6,7]. Little work seems to have been done on direct integral equation solution of viscous flow problems. Coleman [8] solves the biharmonic equation describing slow flow between two semi infinite parallel plates using a complex variable approach but does not consider the effects of singularities arising in the solution domain. Since the vorticity at any singularity becomes unbounded then the methods presented in [8] cannot achieve accurate results throughout the entire flow field.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Integral Equation Methods for Electromagnetic and Elastic Waves is an outgrowth of several years of work. There have been no recent books on integral equation methods. There are books written on integral equations, but either they have been around for a while, or they were written by mathematicians. Much of the knowledge in integral equation methods still resides in journal papers. With this book, important relevant knowledge for integral equations are consolidated in one place and researchers need only read the pertinent chapters in this book to gain important knowledge needed for integral equation research. Also, learning the fundamentals of linear elastic wave theory does not require a quantum leap for electromagnetic practitioners. Integral equation methods have been around for several decades, and their introduction to electromagnetics has been due to the seminal works of Richmond and Harrington in the 1960s. There was a surge in the interest in this topic in the 1980s (notably the work of Wilton and his coworkers) due to increased computing power. The interest in this area was on the wane when it was demonstrated that differential equation methods, with their sparse matrices, can solve many problems more efficiently than integral equation methods. Recently, due to the advent of fast algorithms, there has been a revival in integral equation methods in electromagnetics. Much of our work in recent years has been in fast algorithms for integral equations, which prompted our interest in integral equation methods. While previously, only tens of thousands of unknowns could be solved by integral equation methods, now, tens of millions of unknowns can be solved with fast algorithms. This has prompted new enthusiasm in integral equation methods. Table of Contents: Introduction to Computational Electromagnetics / Linear Vector Space, Reciprocity, and Energy Conservation / Introduction to Integral Equations / Integral Equations for Penetrable Objects / Low-Frequency Problems in Integral Equations / Dyadic Green's Function for Layered Media and Integral Equations / Fast Inhomogeneous Plane Wave Algorithm for Layered Media / Electromagnetic Wave versus Elastic Wave / Glossary of Acronyms
