BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume is a collection of 19 chapters on intelligent engineering systems written by respectable experts of the fields. The book consists of three parts. The first part is devoted to the foundational aspects of computational intelligence. It consists of 8 chapters that include studies in genetic algorithms, fuzzy logic connectives, enhanced intelligence in product models, nature-inspired optimization technologies, particle swarm optimization, evolution algorithms, model complexity of neural networks, and fitness landscape analysis. The second part contains contributions to intelligent computation in networks, presented in 5 chapters. The covered subjects include the application of self-organizing maps for early detection of denial of service attacks, combating security threats via immunity and adaptability in cognitive radio networks, novel modifications in WSN network design for improved SNR and reliability, a conceptual framework for the design of audio based cognitive infocommunication channels, and a case study on the advantages of fuzzy and anytime signal- and image processing techniques. Computational intelligence represents a widely spread interdisciplinary research area with many applications in various disciplines including engineering, medicine, technology, environment, among others. Therefore, third part of this book consists of 6 chapters on applications. This is a very important part of the volume because the reader can find in it a wide range of fields where computational intelligence plays a significant role.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Digital systems that bring together the computing capacity for processing large bodies of information with the human cognitive capability are called intelligent systems. Building these systems has become one of the great goals of modem technology. This goal has both intellectual and economic incentives. The need for such intelligent systems has become more intense in the face of the global connectivity of the internet. There has become an almost insatiable requirement for instantaneous information and decision brought about by this confluence of computing and communication. This requirement can only be satisfied by the construction of innovative intelligent systems. A second and perhaps an even more significant development is the great advances being made in genetics and related areas of biotechnology. Future developments in biotechnology may open the possibility for the development of a true human-silicon interaction at the micro level, neural and cellular, bringing about a need for "intelligent" systems. What is needed to further the development of intelligent systems are tools to enable the representation of human cognition in a manner that allows formal manipulation. The idea of developing such an algebra goes back to Leibniz in the 17th century with his dream of a calculus ratiocinator. It wasn't until two hundred years later beginning with the work of Boole, Cantor and Frege that a formal mathematical logic for modeling human reasoning was developed. The introduction of the modem digital computer during the Second World War by von Neumann and others was a culmination of this intellectual trend.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a scientific field of longstanding tradition, with origins in the early years of computer science. Today AI has reached a level of maturity that allows us to build highly sophisticated systems which perform very different tasks. Nevertheless, its evolution has opened up a number of new problems, ranging from specific algorithms to system integration, which remain elusive and assure a long life for this research field. Research progress in this area is today an international challenge that must be supported by world-class meetings and organizations, but in spite of this fact, there is also an objective need for meetings and organizations that support and disseminate research at other levels. This book focuses on new and original research on Artificial Intelligence.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Neural networks represent a new generation of information processing paradigms designed to mimic-in a very limited sense-the human brain. They can learn, recall, and generalize from training data, and with their potential applications limited only by the imaginations of scientists and engineers, they are commanding tremendous popularity and research interest. Over the last four decades, researchers have reported a number of neural network paradigms, however, the newest of these have not appeared in book form-until now. Recent Advances in Artificial Neural Networks collects the latest neural network paradigms and reports on their promising new applications. World-renowned experts discuss the use of neural networks in pattern recognition, color induction, classification, cluster detection, and more. Application engineers, scientists, and research students from all disciplines with an interest in considering neural networks for solving real-world problems will find this collection useful.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Artificial intelligence in all its forms is increasingly interwoven into all our lives, and remains one of the most lively areas of discussion and interest in technology today. This book presents the proceedings of the 20th International Conference of the Catalan Association for Artificial Intelligence (CCIA’2017): ‘Recent Advances in Artificial Intelligence Research and Development’, held in Deltebre, Terres de l'Ebre, Spain, in October 2017. Despite its title, this annual conference is not only for researchers from the Catalan Countries, but is an international event which attracts participants from countries all around the world. In total, 41 original contributions were submitted to CCIA’2017. Of these, 21 were accepted as long papers for oral presentation and 13 were accepted as short papers to be presented as posters. These 34 submissions appear in this book organized around a number of different topics including: agents and multi-agent systems; artificial vision and image processing; machine learning; artificial neural networks; cognitive modeling; fuzzy logic and reasoning; robotics; and AI applications. The book also includes abstracts of the 3 presentations by invited speakers. The book offers a representative sample of the current state of the art in the artificial intelligence community, and will be of interest to all those working with AI worldwide.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The main goal of the new field of data mining is the analysis of large and complex datasets. Some very important datasets may be derived from business and industrial activities. This kind of data is known as ?enterprise data?. The common characteristic of such datasets is that the analyst wishes to analyze them for the purpose of designing a more cost-effective strategy for optimizing some type of performance measure, such as reducing production time, improving quality, eliminating wastes, or maximizing profit. Data in this category may describe different scheduling scenarios in a manufacturing environment, quality control of some process, fault diagnosis in the operation of a machine or process, risk analysis when issuing credit to applicants, management of supply chains in a manufacturing system, or data for business related decision-making.
