This IMA Volume in Mathematics and its Applications RECENT ADVANCES IN ITERATIVE METHODS is based on the proceedings of a workshop that was an integral part of the 1991-92 IMA program on "Applied Linear Algebra. " Large systems of matrix equations arise frequently in applications and they have the prop erty that they are sparse and/or structured. The purpose of this workshop was to bring together researchers in numerical analysis and various ap plication areas to discuss where such problems arise and possible meth ods of solution. The last two days of the meeting were a celebration dedicated to Gene Golub on the occasion of his sixtieth birthday, with the program arranged by Jack Dongarra and Paul van Dooren. We are grateful to Richard Brualdi, George Cybenko, Alan George, Gene Golub, Mitchell Luskin, and Paul Van Dooren for planning and implementing the year-long program. Nonlinear dynamics is still a hot and challenging topic. In this edited book, we focus on fractional dynamics, infinite dimensional dynamics defined by the partial differential equation, network dynamics, fractal dynamics, and their numerical analysis and simulation.Fractional dynamics is a new topic in the research field of nonlinear dynamics which has attracted increasing interest due to its potential applications in the real world, such as modeling memory processes and materials. In this part, basic theory for fractional differential equations and numerical simulations for these equations will be introduced and discussed.In the infinite dimensional dynamics part, we emphasize on numerical calculation and theoretical analysis, including constructing various numerical methods and computing the corresponding limit sets, etc.In the last part, we show interest in network dynamics and fractal dynamics together with numerical simulations as well as their applications.

IC-SEC 2002 serves as a forum for engineers and scientists who are involved in the use of high performance computers, advanced numerical strategies, computational methods and simulation in various scientific and engineering disciplines. The conference creates a platform for presenting and discussing the latest trends and findings about the state of the art in their particular field(s) of interest. IC-SEC also provides a forum for the interdisciplinary blending of computational efforts in various diversified areas of science, such as biology, chemistry, physics and materials science, as well as all branches of engineering. The proceedings cover a broad range of topics and an application area which involves modelling and simulation work using high performance computers.

The contributions for this volume, dedicated to honour the 65th birthday of Professor I Galligani, have been numerous and cover a wide range of topics of the current Numerical Analysis and of its applications.

This book describes, in a basic way, the most useful and effective iterative solvers and appropriate preconditioning techniques for some of the most important classes of large and sparse linear systems. The solution of large and sparse linear systems is the most time-consuming part for most of the scientific computing simulations. Indeed, mathematical models become more and more accurate by including a greater volume of data, but this requires the solution of larger and harder algebraic systems. In recent years, research has focused on the efficient solution of large sparse and/or structured systems generated by the discretization of numerical models by using iterative solvers.

The text presents and discusses some of the most influential papers in Matrix Computation authored by Gene H. Golub, one of the founding fathers of the field. The collection of 21 papers is divided into five main areas: iterative methods for linear systems, solution of least squares problems, matrix factorizations and applications, orthogonal polynomials and quadrature, and eigenvalue problems. Commentaries for each area are provided by leading experts: Anne Greenbaum, Ake Bjorck, Nicholas Higham, Walter Gautschi, and G. W. (Pete) Stewart. Comments on each paper are also included by the original authors, providing the reader with historical information on how the paper came to be written and under what circumstances the collaboration was undertaken. Including a brief biography and facsimiles of the original papers, this text will be of great interest to students and researchers in numerical analysis and scientific computation.

Numerical analysis has witnessed many significant developments in the 20th century.
