This book offers peer-reviewed articles from the 19th International Conference on Operator Theory, Summer 2002. It contains recent developments in a broad range of topics from operator theory, operator algebras and their applications, particularly to differential analysis, complex functions, ergodic theory, mathematical physics, matrix analysis, and systems theory. This book contains a selection of carefully refereed research papers, most of which were presented at the fourteenth International Workshop on Operator Theory and its Applications (IWOTA), held at Cagliari, Italy, from June 24-27, 2003. This volume consists of the plenary lectures and invited talks in the special session on pseudo-differential operators given at the Fourth Congress of the International Society for Analysis, Applications and Computation (ISAAC) held at York University in Toronto, August 11-16, 2003. The theme is to look at pseudo-differential operators in a very general sense and to report recent advances in a broad spectrum of topics, such as pde, quantization, filters and localization operators, modulation spaces, and numerical experiments in wavelet transforms and orthonormal wavelet bases.

The state space method developed in the last decades allows us to study the theory of linear systems by using tools from the theory of linear operators; conversely, it had a strong influence on operator theory introducing new questions and topics. The present volume contains a collection of essays representing some of the recent advances in the state space method. This book explores new difference schemes for approximating the solutions of regular and singular perturbation boundary-value problems for PDEs. The construction is based on the exact difference scheme and Taylor's decomposition on the two or three points, which permits investigation of differential equations with variable coefficients and regular and singular perturbation boundary value problems.

Quadrature domains were singled out about 30 years ago by D. Aharonov and H.S. Shapiro in connection with an extremal problem in function theory. Since then, a series of coincidental discoveries put this class of planar domains at the center of crossroads of several quite independent mathematical theories, e.g., potential theory, Riemann surfaces, inverse problems, holomorphic partial differential equations, fluid mechanics, operator theory.
