This book explores the internationalization policy, programs, and initiatives at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the United States. This book addresses the value and impact of internationalization for all students at HBCUs and beyond. Internationalization can be leveraged as a tool for social justice and diversity thus moving students who are often placed at the periphery of society to the center. It also highlights the tensions between internationalization and institutional policies and priorities, while still serving, who have been historically marginalized.

The book Shaping a Humane World through Global Higher Education: Pre-Challenges and Post Opportunities during a Pandemic, is a series of empirical studies and essays originally presented in the 2020 Virtual Star Scholar conference: The Humane World hosted by the University of Kathmandu, Nepal. The authors represent five countries: Australia, Kenya, Malaysia, Nepal, and the United States. Their voices represent issues important in both the Global North and the Global South and what in particular is needed to design essential policies and training required to achieve success. This book explores emerging populations of mobile international students in order to consider innovative and inclusive approaches for a more equitable and socially just higher education for new generations of international students. It offers critical reflections on the intersections of race, place, and space at universities hosting international students across multiple geographic and cultural contexts. The volume is designed to catalyze debate on how international student learning and exchange needs to be reimagined for new generations of students in a world of increasing complexity and virtual mobility. International student mobility in higher education is intended to serve as an educational experience that speaks to the need for more interculturally sensitive and globally competent learners. However, internationalization practices like study abroad have increasingly been influenced by neoliberalism, and dynamics of commodification and consumerism, emphasizing the private benefits of such experiences in terms of the social and economic benefits to individual participants. This raises the question of inequality in such internationalization practices; who is benefitting from it? As post-secondary institutions around the world become more and more internationalized, what are the undesirable effects of these developments? Given the rapid expansion of research on both internationalization and inequality in higher education, it is foreseeable that this book will become a much-referenced text within the field and profession.

In this book, we explore the socio-political environment that impacts international students’ employability and discuss student experiences of employability development during and after their studies. The book also aims to provide a holistic understanding of international student employability on a global scale, incorporating various higher education contexts, including the US, UK, Netherlands, Vietnam, and Japan. This book includes both conceptualizations of international students who participate in “internationalization abroad” through physically crossing the border and those who participate in “internationalization at home’’. The COVID-19 pandemic has potentially transformed international education as many international students were forced to stay in their home countries and resort to online education. The book looks into the bigger questions: How do the institutions of higher education expand programs and resources for international students and their employability? Is the internationalization at home model going to be increasingly popular in the post-pandemic world? Will employers be receptive to international graduates globally? Syracuse University (retired), Smithee Associates, LLC, United States ABSTRACT What follows are my recollections of how international education evolved in the nearly 50 years of my engagement in the field. This personal view of what happened in the development of the field comes from my experiences before and after starting my career. I will also include my recollections of how the term “international educators” arose, technological changes, events, and circumstances along the way that influenced our thinking about the field and its members: international educators. Spoiler Alert: We got here because people and organizations in the field before and after the year 2000 had a vision and displayed both an urgency and patience that required pivoting and resilience to deliver the knowledge and processes to make the field stable and viable.
