Remember The Alamo Bowl

BOOK EXCERPT:

He was the back-up quarterback -- a walk on -- playing the last game of his senior year shortly after his father died and four years into a checkered athletic career. Bram Kohlhausen was not emotionally prepared when tapped to start in the 2016 Alamo Bowl after Texas Christian University’s star QB was arrested for punching a San Antonio cop in a bar fight. Behind 31-0 against the 5th ranked Oregon Ducks at halftime, Bram won the game in its third overtime. This legendary matchup is considered perhaps the most riveting of comebacks in college bowl history. ''Now that Jim Reeves has written a book about the 2016 Alamo Bowl, the astounding result of that game has become official. It deserved nothing less.'' --Chuck Culpepper, Washington Post "Even readers who have no affiliation with TCU will find themselves caught up in this tale of triumph. A deeply reported and well-told account of a legendary day on the gridiron." -Kirkus Reviews. “Reeves is the consummate journalist who will chase a story until it gives up. His work ethic shines through in Remember the Alamo Bowl.” – Jim Dent, author of Twelve Mighty Orphans: The Inspiring True Story of the Mighty Mites Who Ruled Texas Football and The Junction Boys: How Ten Days in Hell with Bear Bryant Forged a Championship Team “A candid and poignant true life parable of one young man's winding journey from unfilled promises to a moment of magical destiny. A beautiful, uplifting story, so very well told...” –Carlton Stowers, two-time Edgar winner and author of Staubach: Portrait of the Brightest Star

Remember The Alamo

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Battle of the Alamo is about to be fought again in this thriller by the USA Today-bestselling author . . . William J. Johnstone, the author of Vengeance Is Mine and Invasion USA sounds another wake-up call with his latest action-packed novel set on America’s most dangerous battleground: its own border. Remember the Alamo Only career politicians could dream up a stunt like this: courting the growing Hispanic community that keeps them in office, the geniuses in charge in San Antonio agree to grant temporary dominion over the Alamo to the Mexican government for a week-long celebration. That doesn't sit too well with Gulf War vet Phil Cody, who remembers his Texas history. With veterans from wars as far back as WWII, Cody organizes a nonviolent protest on the day of the handover. But word comes from Mexico that the reconquistadors—anti-American extremists determined to reassert Mexican control over the southwestern United States by the bloodiest means necessary—are planning to take over the Alamo permanently. Peace becomes war. Despite ample warning, the American authorities twiddle their thumbs when the reconquistadors make their move, leaving it up to Cody and his band of patriots, who are seriously outnumbered and outgunned, to protect the Alamo. Left out to dry by their own government, history repeats itself as Americans are once again besieged and forced to take a stand to preserve their heritage. When this battle is over, America will have a new reason to remember the Alamo . . .

Balls And Stripes

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Balls and Stripes is a collection of stories about Alaska's most popular sport, basketball — and more. The title comes from my many experiences playing, coaching, and broadcasting Naismith's game; as well as refereeing the sport and also wearing the stripes of a sergeant in the U.S. Army. Basketball has taken me all over Alaska, with radio gear or whistle in hand. From Barrow to Petersburg, from Dutch Harbor to Tok, it has been a marvelous journey, with countless amusing experiences as well as dramatic moments. Much of the action occurs in my hometown, Cordova. A small fishing town of 2500 located on Prince William Sound, its denizens are passionate about their hoops, and also their rivalry with Valdez, located just 70 miles away. In many ways, sports transcend location. Small town basketball is the same anywhere; yet Alaska, with its vast spaces and dramatic climates, offers unique experiences. In northernmost Barrow, I watched Inupiat cooks shut down a high school cafeteria so they could glimpse the sun for the first time in 67 days; on the way to Dutch Harbor, I heard a pilot announce the reassuring words that he would land the small prop plane “whenever we can”, to load on fuel necessary to complete the flight; in Petersburg, I learned about “julebukking” and Men's Night Out. Refereeing, always a source of potential controversy, has provided its share of highlights. How many officials can claim fame for calling a technical foul on a curtain; or playing the first minutes of a championship game with the wrong size ball? Football and baseball are also included. Guess who brought Oregon State's mascot Benny the Beaver to Cordova's Iceworm Festival; and dodged barbed wire while tracking down a fly ball in Korea? And, like so many others, who can not recall in vivid detail a last second shot that didn't go in? People, places, moments. Sports - drama, tears, and cheers. It's all here.
