An examination of the bodily, situated aspects of data-visualization work, looking at visualization practices around the development of MRI technology. Our bodies are scanned, probed, imaged, sampled, and transformed into data by clinicians and technologists. In this book, Silvia Casini reveals the affective relations and materiality that turn data into image--and in so doing, gives bodies back to data. Opening the black box of MRI technology, Casini examines the bodily, situated aspects of visualization practices around the development of this technology. Reframing existing narratives of biomedical innovation, she emphasizes the important but often overlooked roles played by aesthetics, affectivity, and craft practice in medical visualization. Combining history, theory, laboratory ethnography, archival research, and collaborative art-science, Casini retrieves the multiple presences and agencies of bodies in data visualization, mapping the traces of scientists' body work and embodied imagination. She presents an in-depth ethnographic study of MRI development at the University of Aberdeen's biomedical physics laboratory, from the construction of the first whole-body scanner for clinical purposes through the evolution of the FFC-MRI. Going beyond her original focus on MRI, she analyzes a selection of neuroscience- or biomedicine-inspired interventions by artists in media ranging from sculpture to virtual reality. Bringing together media studies and environmental humanities, the contributors to Saturation develop saturation as a heuristic to analyze phenomena in which the elements involved are difficult or impossible to separate. In ordinary language, saturation describes the condition of being thoroughly soaked, while in chemistry it is the threshold at which something can be maximally dissolved or absorbed in a solution. Has the advent of internet diminished the role television plays in science communication? Some might think so, but we don't. We are convinced that television still plays an important role in keeping the general public informed of developments from the world of science and technology, and its influences on society. Television might still even be the most important channel, given that in Europe and the US almost everybody watches it, much more so than surfing the internet regularly or reading newspapers and magazines. Still, television programmes on science are hard to find. It is a fact that academics and public affairs officers do not always appreciate the power of this medium. By showing the possibilities television has to offer, this book intends to change this attitude. Besides documentaries, other formats are equally suited to help popularise science and technology-related subjects: news-items, soaps, docudrama's, talk shows and quizzes.

The essays in this book provide an excellent introduction to the means by which scientists convey their ideas.
