This landmark volume of extensive empirical research across Europe explains how young people become vulnerable to radicalisation and violent extremism. Offering a critical perspective on the concept of radicalisation, this volume views it from the perspective of social actors who engage in radicalising milieus but have not crossed the threshold into violent extremism. It brings together contributions conducted as part of a cross-European (including France, Germany, Russia, Turkey, the UK, and beyond) study of young people's engagement in 'extreme right' and 'Islamist' milieus. It argues that radicalisation is best understood as a relational concept reflecting a social process rooted in relational inequalities and shaped by multiple social interactions, which not only facilitate but also constrain radicalisation. This book discusses a range of interventions that can be implemented in schools to prevent radicalization and violent extremism. The book advocates for primary prevention by strengthening social and citizenship competences of youth. It combines perspectives of citizenship education, school psychology, positive psychology, peace psychology and social-emotional learning to highlight the spectrum of approaches that practitioners can consider adopting or advocating for. The study of violent extremism has seen a great deal of academic and practitioner focus on the processes of radicalization, and strategies to counter and de-radicalize extremists. Comparatively, little has been written on the subject of Diversion – early, upstream interventions aimed at deflecting individuals from a pathway of radicalization. This volume addresses this gap in scholarship by analyzing the strategies being deployed worldwide, aimed at diverting or deflecting individuals, and communities, from the path of radicalization. Disengagement – which is often necessary when one has already progressed past the 'at-risk' stage – is also addressed, given that social workers, counselors and other practitioners do not necessarily find the distinction between the two a critical issue in practice. This book analyses the marketing techniques that terrorist organisations employ to encourage people to adopt their ideology and become devoted supporters. The book’s central thesis is that due to the development of digital technologies and social media, terrorist groups are employing innovative marketing techniques and advertising strategies to foster an emotional connection with their audiences, particularly those in younger demographics. By conducting thematic and narrative analyses of Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) propagandist magazines, as well as looking at the group’s online communities, the book demonstrates that terrorist groups behave as commercial brands by establishing an emotional connection with their potential recruits. Specifically, groups and their potential supporters follow the logic of emotional choice. The book emphasizes that while ISIS became the first group that discovered and benefited from the power of marketing, it did not have a supernatural power and thus it is possible to find a response to it, which is particularly important now. The book eventually poses a question about whether terrorism has become the product of marketing in the same way as any mainstream consumer product is, and asks what can we do to battle the appeal of marketing-savvy terrorist groups. This book includes the proceedings of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization’s (NATO) 2008 Advanced Research Workshop (ARW). The goal of the meeting was to explore methods to involve the community in the fight against terrorism in an effort to enhance its protection from terrorist attacks and to establish a network between the participants for future collaborations. The two main topics of this book are: (1) Defining the problem of terrorism and collective community protection; why does terrorism exists and why do people join and/or support extremist groups? (2) Counter-terrorism practices and their relation to the community; focused on developing non-orthodox methods to combat terrorism. In other words, why communities should be included in the fight against terrorism. This book should be seen as a guide for policy makers and practitioners to gain a better understanding of how counter terrorism, as well as many other applications, requires community support and involvement to the fullest extent possible. Because the existing threat of terrorism is proof of the failed classical militaristic approaches, the time has come to integrate our communities into the practice of fighting the threat together.
