BOOK EXCERPT:
Resource Recovery in Drinking Water Treatment concentrates on techniques and methods for water purification. The book develops a new approach—resource recovery—toward drinking water, including the role of methods (adsorption, membrane, ion – exchange, biosorption, coagulation, etc.) and nanocomposites (such as biochar, sludge-based composites, chitosan, polymer, magnetic particles, etc.) in water resource recovery. It provides an in-depth overview on emerging water treatment techniques and the resource recovery of materials during the treatment process. Finally, the book aims to introduce polluted waters as new and sustainable sources rather than seeing wastewaters only a source of hazardous organic and inorganic matters. This book is part of a three-volume set that stresses the importance of contaminated water remediation, including surface waters, municipal or industrial wastewaters, and waters as a new source of nutrients, minerals and energy. Presents novel approaches to recover materials from water during treatment Discusses fundamentals and principals of water treatment to figure out current status and need for new development Includes applications of various composites and particles in water treatment and water recovery

Water Recycling and Resource Recovery in Industry: Analysis, Technologies and Implementation provides a definitive and in-depth discussion of the current state-of-the-art tools and technologies enabling the industrial recycling and reuse of water and other resources. The book also presents in detail how these technologies can be implemented in order to maximize resource recycling in industrial practice, and to integrate water and resource recycling in ongoing industrial production processes. Special attention is given to non-process engineering aspects such as systems analysis, software tools, health, regulations, life-cycle analysis, economic impact and public participation. Case studies illustrate the huge potential of environmental technology to optimise resource utilisation in industry. The large number of figures, tables and case studies, together with the book's multidisciplinary approach, makes Water Recycling and Resource Recovery in Industry: Analysis, Technologies and Implementation the perfect reference work for academics, professionals and consultants dealing with industrial water resources recovery. Contents Part I: Industrial reuse for environmental protection Part II: System analysis to assist in closing industrial resource cycles Part III: Characterisation of process water quality Part IV: Technological aspects of closing industrial cycles Part V: Examples of closed water cycles in industrial processes Part VI: Resource protection policies in industry

BOOK EXCERPT:
Throughout history, the first and foremost role of urban water management has been the protection of human health and the local aquatic environment. To this end, the practice of (waste-)water treatment has maintained a central focus on the removal of pollutants through dissipative pathways. Approaches like - in the case of wastewater treatment - the activated sludge process, which makes 'hazardous things' disappear, have benefitted our society tremendously by safeguarding human and environmental health. While conventional (waste-)water treatment is regarded as one of the greatest engineering achievements of the 20th century, these dissipative approaches will not suffice in the 21st century as we enter the era of the circular economy. A key challenge for the future of urban water management is the need to re-envision the role of water infrastructure, still holding paramount the safeguard of human and environmental health while also becoming a more proactive force for sustainable development through the recovery of resources embedded in urban water. This book aims (i) to explain the basic principles governing resource recovery from water (how much is there, really); (ii) to provide a comprehensive overview and critical assessment of the established and emerging technologies for resource recovery from water; and (iii) to put resource recovery from water in a legal, economic (including the economy of scale of recovered products), social (consumer's point of view), and environmental sustainability framework. This book serves as a powerful teaching tool at the graduate entry master level with an aim to help develop the next generation of engineers and experts and is also highly relevant for seasoned water professionals and practicing engineers.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Potable water treatment processes produce safe drinking water and generate a wide variety of waste products known as residuals, including organic and inorganic compounds in liquid, solid, and gaseous forms. In the current regulatory climate, a complete management program for a water treatment facility should include the development of a plan to remove and dispose of these residuals in a manner that meets the crucial goals of cost effectiveness and regulatory compliance. This comprehensive water treatment residuals management plan should involve the: 1) Characterization of the form, quantity, and quality of the residuals; 2) determination of the appropriate regulatory requirements; 3) identification of feasible disposal options; 4) selection of appropriate residuals processing/treatment technologies; and development of a residuals management strategy that meets both the economic and noneconomic goals established for a water treatment facility. This manual provides general information and insight into each of these activities that a potable water treatment facility should perform in developing a residuals management plan.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This book introduces the 3R concept applied to wastewater treatment and resource recovery under a double perspective. Firstly, it deals with innovative technologies leading to: Reducing energy requirements, space and impacts; Reusing water and sludge of sufficient quality; and Recovering resources such as energy, nutrients, metals and chemicals, including biopolymers. Besides targeting effective C,N&P removal, other issues such as organic micropollutants, gases and odours emissions are considered. Most of the technologies analysed have been tested at pilot- or at full-scale. Tools and methods for their Economic, Environmental, Legal and Social impact assessment are described. The 3R concept is also applied to Innovative Processes design, considering different levels of innovation: Retrofitting, where novel units are included in more conventional processes; Re-Thinking, which implies a substantial flowsheet modification; and Re-Imagining, with completely new conceptions. Tools are presented for Modelling, Optimising and Selecting the most suitable plant layout for each particular scenario from a holistic technical, economic and environmental point of view.
