BOOK EXCERPT:
Even if we were to discover the historical truth about the origin of the legend of the Pied Piper of Hamelin, we still would not explain why its appeal to the imagination of artists and poets has been so extensive and the span of interpretations placed on the figure so divergent. The author of this book believes that the principle of reciprocity must be taken into account and this reflects the duality of the mind with its conscious and subconscious aspects. Can we align the Pied Piper with Ulysses and Gilgamesh on the basis of the mythology of the sun and its wandering surrogates as they journey through the night in quest of the anima, the eternal female?

BOOK EXCERPT:
In 1284, while the town of Hamelin was suffering from a rat infestation, a piper dressed in multicolored ("pied") clothing appeared, claiming to be a rat-catcher. He promised the mayor a solution to their problem with the rats. The mayor, in turn, promised to pay him for the removal of the rats (according to some versions of the story, the promised sum was 1,000 guilders). The piper accepted and played his pipe to lure the rats into the Weser River, where they all drowned. Despite the piper's success, the mayor reneged on his promise and refused to pay him the full sum (reputedly reduced to a sum of 50 guilders) even going so far as to blame the piper for bringing the rats himself in an extortion attempt. Enraged, the piper stormed out of the town, vowing to return later to take revenge. On Saint John and Paul's day, while the adults were in church, the piper returned dressed in green like a hunter and playing his pipe.

In 1284, the German town of Hamelin was plagued by an infestation of rats. A pipe-player appeared, dressed in multi-colored (pied) clothing. He struck a deal with the town Council to rid the town of rats if they paid him 1,000 guilders. An agreement was made and the piper played his pipe, leading all the rats to the river where they drowned. Returning to get his fee, the town Council refused to pay. In response, the piper played his pipe and all the children of the town followed him and were shuttered into a mountain with a secret door. Did the children return? Did the Pied Piper get his money? BOOK EXCERPT:
Back into the mouth of hell... Daniel and Hannah Reynolds are newly married with their first child on the way when a notice comes from a lawyer saying that the remaining member of the Bonavaris clan has died and willed Bloodmoon Manor and all its possessions to Hannah, her former maid and cook. While Hannah can't fathom the reason for the bequeath, the notion of selling the manor and the valuable items inside it begins to grow inside her like an obsession. She and Daniel have begun their married life with little more than outstanding debts from his medical education--debts that come due around the same time as the birth of their baby. After a lifetime of poverty, Hannah refuses to allow her child to face the kind of scavenging, hand-to-mouth existence that had led to her employment at the horrible Bloodmoon Manor in the first place. Unable to convince his beloved wife to forget about returning to Bloodmoon Cove to secure a future for their family, Daniel has no choice but to follow her into what he aptly calls "the mouth of hell"--a place Hannah just barely escaped with her life last time. Daniel's worst fears are justified when the doors of Bloodmoon Manor slam shut behind them. They've been lured here deliberately, and the horrors that haunt the dark, evil manor aren't willing to let Hannah leave ever again...
