Reuben And Rachel

BOOK EXCERPT:

Susanna Haswell Rowson, a popular and prolific writer, actress, and educator in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, had a truly transatlantic life and career, moving twice from England to America and publishing extensively in both countries. A transatlantic sensibility informs her fictionalized “history” of America, Reuben and Rachel, which traces ten generations of an extended family, beginning with the marriage of Christopher Columbus’s son to a native Peruvian princess, moving through the Tudor succession crises and the colonial settlement of New England, and ending with the title characters, who leave England for America, renounce titles of nobility, and consider their children “true-born Americans.” In Rowson’s representation, the American character derives from fusion and hybridity, the results of intermarriage across racial, religious and national lives.

The Americana Song Reader

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

William Studwell has struck gold again! Providing a heterogenous mixture of songs that mirrors the diversity of the United States and its culture, The Americana Song Reader is an entertaining and informative collection of over 130 historical essays on various American and foreign songs that have had a significant impact on U.S. popular culture. The essays give you basic historical data on the work, refer to any related or affiliated works, and touch upon the cultural context of its creation and popular usage in the United States. Presented in an offbeat, somewhat irreverent, yet scholarly style, the author has once again compiled a reference book that is fun to read. In addition to presenting information useful for reference, The Americana Song Reader contains anecdotes, ironic sidelights, poetry, and allusions to parodies. For ease of use, the book is divided into several sections. These sections, with some representative songs listed, include: Dancing Songs: “After the Ball,” “The Hokey Pokey,” “Sleeping Beauty Waltz” Marching Songs: “March of the Toys,” “When the Saints Go Marching In” Rural and Western Songs: “The Big Rock Candy Mountain,” “Jessie James,” “The Streets of Laredo” Songs That Excite or Amuse: “An American in Paris,” “1812 Overture,” “The Sidewalks of New York” Songs That Soothe or Bring Tears: “Beautiful Dreamer,” “I'm Always Chasing Rainbows,” “My Wild Irish Rose” Children's Songs: “Hansel and Gretel,” “Pop Goes the Weasel,” “Sing a Song of Sixpence” Circus Songs: “Barnum and Bailey's Favorite,” “Be a Clown,” “The Flying Trapeze” Drinking Songs: “Auld Lange Syne,” “Little Brown Jug,” “Ninety Nine Bottles of Beer” College Songs: “Iowa Corn Song,” “Notre Dame Victory Song,” “The Whiffenpoof Song” Song title index and author/group index Whether the music comes from New York City, remote rural areas of the South or West, or from Vienna or Paris, all music having some sort of impact on the lives of everyday Americans is in a very true way part of Americana. In The Americana Song Reader, you'll see the songs both as small pieces of the American culture puzzle and, collectively, as a large segment of the music of the country. This newest addition to William Studwell's collection of song readers will delight the general public, musicians, and librarians.

Treacherous Pursuit

BOOK EXCERPT:

A researcher, Steven Grant, is on the brink of a discovery of global significance. Steven needs just a few more DNA samples from remote, indigenous people in Pakistan and Australia to bring his research to a conclusion. He then receives a serious threat - if he continues his research, he will face serious consequences. This letter and further attempts on his life fuel his determination to find who is behind the threat. Despite objections from his new girlfriend, Rachel, that it is too dangerous, he flies into Karachi to take a domestic flight to the north of Pakistan. While in Karachi, he meets a Chinese expatriate worker, Esther. Their relationship develops. His uncle, a businessman in Karachi and with whom Steven is staying, tells Steven of his illicit relationship with Steven's mother many years in the past. Before Steven can process this information, his trip is interrupted by his mother's ill health. He returns to the UK. While back in the UK, he meets with his brother and learns that his uncle had abused his brother when he was young. Steven's property is targeted by an arsonist. He vows to return to Karachi to confront his uncle, to spend time with Esther, and to discover who is targeting him. On his return to Pakistan, he gets the DNA samples he requires, but an unknown party steals them following an earthquake. Meanwhile, a group of northern tribesmen kidnaps Esther. The kidnappers will only speak with him to arrange the ransom. He embarks on a quest to rescue his beloved, unaware that Esther has betrayed him by bargaining with the kidnappers and that he is walking into a trap. When Steven escapes from the kidnappers, the leader of the gang shoots his travelling companion, Tahir. Steven is now on the run, desperate to retrieve the DNA samples he badly needs. He returns to the clinic in the north and finally obtains the samples. Steven returns to the UK. He publishes his research findings in the Lancet. The article proves that a US company had allowed harmful substances to be used in plastic food packaging that damages DNA. He tries to be reconciled to Rachel, but she has started a relationship with his brother. Then unexpectantly, he meets Esther's sister, a girl he wronged in his youth.
