BOOK EXCERPT:
The book Revitalizing Christianity takes the reader through ten areas where Christians misunderstand highly motivating Christian truths. This study guide is designed to work with an individual or group interested in seriously studying the Bible with the help of that book. Many Christians have doubts about the reality of God. Attacks, especially in the realm of science, have many questioning whether the God of the Bible is real. Without getting bogged down in the science, Mr. Webster provides simple assurance that the God of Christianity is the only real God. But the God of Christianity has gained a terrible reputation, and these books address how understanding the biblical message from God's perspective reveals a God who really is good and wonderful and even exciting. Mr. Webster addresses misunderstandings about Christian love and the nature of sin, saving faith, Christian hope (heaven), God's plan, the role of suffering, the role of prayer, the role of Christian forgiveness, and the role of the church, taking the reader back to the Bible over and over to show that Christianity was always meant to be exciting and good.

BOOK EXCERPT:
LET’S REVITALIZE CHRISTIANITY is a book designed to give people what I have heard many folks ask for: How can Christianity give me a better way of life? It is designed to give a different slant to Christianity than one would get in a sectarian church, and it is based entirely on the New Testament of the New International Version of the Holy Bible. After a brief introduction many problems in our society are mentioned to which the existing churches do not seem to give solution or closure. Since many folks have given up attending church, we give good reasons why attending church is a good thing for us. What is fellowship, and how can we painlessly learn to love someone we don’t really care very much about? Why is Jesus is known as the Prince of Peace? And can all of us be Princes and Princesses of Peace? We share a small study of prayer, and how we can help prayer work. There are two extremely important New Testament prayers. We show how the Lord’s Prayer can be a guide to effective living, and we show how the Gethsemane Prayer is the birth of Christianity, and how it instills in all of us what Jesus wants for our interactive relationship with Him and with God. What is freedom? And what’s the formula for achieving freedom? A short epilogue sums up the entire revitalization concept. And finally, we give a scriptural account of the life of Christ simply as an item of interest. For example, we cite Christ’s lineage as reported in Luke 3:23-38. All Christians should cherish this book.

BOOK EXCERPT:
In Revitalizing Theological Epistemology Steven B. Sherman addresses questions about what evangelical theology ought to be doing in light of the changing cultural situation. He wonders if the Christian faith should continue to be presented and defended mainly according to Enlightenment principles when growing criticism of modern thought is affecting virtually every discipline, and if evangelicalism and its intellectual leaders ought to wait it out or whether they should re-vision their theology. This book is about contemporary evangelical approaches to the knowledge of God, considering - and suggesting - ways Christian philosophers and theologians envision and make use of theological knowledge in the postmodern context.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The practice of Christianity is going through a transition that is deeper than the Reformation. The Thinking Christian explores two main questions: (1) What is "religion" as a general social process that can link humans to Profound Reality, and (2) what is a meaningful and appropriate mode of Christian theologizing, communal life, and mission to this planet for a viable and vital next Christian practice? These are profound probes, and they are communal and activist guidelines for general readers. Such union of the profound and the practical pertains to the needs of scholars as well.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Framed by theories of syncretism and revitalization, Religious Revitalization among the Kiowas examines changes in Kiowa belief and ritual in the final decades of the nineteenth century. During the height of the horse-and-bison culture, Kiowa beliefs were founded in the notion of daudau, a force permeating the universe that was accessible through vision quests. Following the end of the Southern Plains wars in 1875, the Kiowas were confined within the boundaries of the Kiowa-Comanche-Apache (Plains Apache) Reservation. As wards of the government, they witnessed the extinction of the bison herds, which led to the collapse of the Sun Dance by 1890. Though prophet movements in the 1880s had failed to restore the bison, other religions emerged to fill the void left by the loss of the Sun Dance. Kiowas now sought daudau through the Ghost Dance, Christianity, and the Peyote religion. Religious Revitalization among the Kiowas examines the historical and sociocultural conditions that spawned the new religions that arrived in Kiowa country at the end of the nineteenth century, as well as Native and non-Native reactions to them. A thorough examination of these sources reveals how resilient and adaptable the Kiowas were in the face of cultural genocide between 1883 and 1933. Although the prophet movements and the Ghost Dance were short-lived, Christianity and the Native American Church have persevered into the twenty-first century. Benjamin R. Kracht shows how Kiowa traditions and spirituality were amalgamated into the new religions, creating a distinctive Kiowa identity.
