Rhythm Of The Wild

BOOK EXCERPT:

From Kim Heacox, the acclaimed author of The Only Kayak and John Muir and the Ice That Started a Fire, comes Rhythm of the Wild, an Alaska memoir focused on Denali National Park. Music runs through every page of this book, as do stories, rivers and wolves. At its heart, Rhythm of the Wild is a love story. It begins in 1981 and ends in 2014, yet reaches beyond the arc of time. Author and mountaineer Jonathan Waterman has called Heacox “our northern Edward Abbey.” In this book we find out why. We hitchhike with Kim through Idaho, camp on the Colorado Plateau, and fly off the sand cliffs of Hangman Creek with a little terrier named Super Max, the Wonder Dog. We meet Zed, the Aborigine; Nine Fingers, the blues guitarist; and Adolph Murie, the legendary wildlife biologist, who dared to say that wolves should be protected, not persecuted. Kim also reprises in this book his friend Richard Steele, a beloved character from The Only Kayak. Some books are larger than their actual subject—this is one. Part memoir, part exploration of Denali’s inspiring natural and human history, and part conservation polemic, Rhythm of the Wild ranges from funny to provocative. It’s a celebration of—and a plea to restore and defend—the vibrant earth and our rightful place in it.

For more than 40 years, Principles of Neural Science has helped readers understand the link between the human brain and behavior. As the renowned text has shown, all behavior is an expression of neural activity and the future of both clinical neurology and psychiatry is dependent on the progress of neural science. Fully updated, this sixth edition of the landmark reference reflects the latest research, clinical perspectives, and advances in the field. It offers an unparalleled perspective on the the current state and future of neural science. This new edition features: Unmatched coverage of how the nerves, brain, and mind function NEW chapters on: - The Computational Bases of Neural Circuits that Mediate Behavior - Brain-Machine Interfaces - Decision-Making and Consciousness NEW section on the neuroscientific principles underlying the disorders of the nervous system Expanded coverage of the different forms of human memory Highly detailed chapters on stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis 2,200 images, including 300 new color illustrations, diagrams, radiology studies, and PET scans Principles of Neural Science, Sixth Edition benefits from a cohesive organization, beginning with an insightful overview of the interrelationships between the brain, nervous system, genes, and behavior. The text is divided into nine sections: Part I: Overall Perspective provides an overview of the broad themes of neural science, including the basic anatomical organization of the nervous system and the genetic bases of nervous system function and behavior. Part II: Cell and Molecular Biology of Cells of the Nervous System examines the basic properties of nerve cells, including the generation and conduction of propagated signaling. Part III: Synaptic Transmission focuses on the electrophysiological and molecular mechanism of synaptic transmission with chapters on neuronal excitability, neurotransmitters, and transmitter release. Part IV: Perception discusses the various aspects of sensory perception, including how information from the primary organs of sensation is transmitted to and processed by the central nervous system. Part V: Movement considers the neural mechanisms underlying movement and examines a new treatment that addresses how the basal ganglia regulate the selection of motor actions and instantiate reinforcement learning. Part VI: The Biology of Emotion, Motivation and Homeostasis examines the neural mechanisms by which subcortical areas mediate homeostatic control mechanisms, emotions, and motivation. Part VII: Development and the Emergence of Behavior looks at the nervous system from early embryonic differentiation to the formation and elimination of synapses. Part VIII: Learning, Memory, Language and Cognition expands on the previous section, examining the cellular mechanisms of implicit and explicit memory storage, as well as decision-making and consciousness. Part IX: explores the neural mechanisms underlying diseases and disorders of the nervous system, including autism spectrum disorder, epilepsy, schizophrenia, and anxiety.

Lucy On The Wild Side

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

A zookeeper always on the fringe learns to go after her wildest dreams—including a certain television star—in this charming and laugh-out-loud romantic comedy by Kerry Rea, author of The Wedding Ringer. Lucy Rourke has two great loves in her life: the gorilla troop she cares for as a primatologist and the laundry list of reality TV shows she watches to escape the fact that her actual love life doesn’t exist. And like a reality contestant gunning for the final rose, Lucy’s laser-focused on one thing: getting promoted to head keeper. So when a wildlife docuseries hosted by hotshot TV personality Kai Bridges chooses her zoo as its summer filming location, she sees an opportunity to showcase her beloved gorillas to the world and land a starring role in her department. When Kai and his film crew arrive, however, it's obvious to Lucy that Kai cares more about sky-high ratings than the gorillas, and he considers her a camera-averse know-it-all whose wardrobe consists entirely of khaki. But she’s surprised to discover there’s more to him than his rugged good looks and cheesy catchphrases...and that maybe a promotion isn’t the only thing she wants. But when secrets from their pasts threaten to complicate everything, Lucy discovers that happiness and success aren’t the same thing—and that finding joy just might mean getting a little wild.

Afro Christiano Haitiano Voodoo

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Some Library of Congress Representatives placed AFRO-CHRISTIANO-HAITIANO-Voodoo (A. C. H. V.) under the category of scientific work! Ms. Barrett (Literary Agent) acknowledged A. C. H. V.s objectivity! Writers Literary Agency Representatives like the concept and found it unique. Mr. C. H. Dodd Peters said "a tradition may undergo alteration or distortion in the course of long transmission by word-of-mouth. . . . When . . . written, stands substantially unaltered; . . . test and control it by a careful and critical study of the documents which caught and fixed it at the earliest accessible stage of development [1]." In order to prevent alteration or distortion, one put in writing some of the elements found in voodoo (i.e., songs, prayers, tales, etc) that initiates and non-initiates heard. In passing, I did not intend to reveal any secrets initiates kept. We strived to come to call voodoo AFRO-CHRISTIANO-HAITIANO. This project became important to me after learning from several sources some people have been looking for anti-Christ elements to destroy them. I planned to make necessary repairs. * * * We intended to present some questions many voodooists posed about voodoo and to transmit objective responses through AFRO-CHRISTIANO-HAITIANO-Voodoo (A. C. H. V.). One aimed at confirming the responses with studies conducted and empirical data; honoring voodooists who did not question voodoo. One worked to sustain the faith of those persons and to perpetuate the words of God. One aimed at proving that God exists. This specially came to be more important when I heard on the radio (U. S. A.) most "baby boomers" asked whether God existed or not; if they have worked on Earth in vain. Here, one planed to honor the major and minor spirits. My work differs from the books of DOKTOR Snake (VOODOO SPELLBOOK) and Mrs. Denise Alvarado (THE VOODOO HOODOO SPELL BOOK). In their books, they paid attention to spells. I paid attention to spells and other matters in my book. Mrs. Catherine YRONWODE's work entailed herb and root virtues or their inclusion in magic. (The title of her book is HOODOO HERB AND ROOT MAGIC.) I paid attention to magic and other matters in book. Mr. Milo RIGAUD's SECRETS OF VOODOO dealt with secrets of voodoo. Mine did not. I included hundreds of lyrics to voodoo songs in my work and they, at the very least, render it unique.
