BOOK EXCERPT:
Rights of Man (1791), a book by Thomas Paine, including 31 articles, posits that popular political revolution is permissible when a government does not safeguard the natural rights of its people. Using these points as a base it defends the French Revolution against Edmund Burke's attack in Reflections on the Revolution in France (1790).It was published in two parts in March 1791 and February 1792.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Thomas Aquinas's Summa Theologica is a monumental work that is widely considered one of the most important texts in the history of philosophy and theology. Divided into three main parts, the book addresses a wide range of theological topics, providing rigorous arguments and insightful analysis. Aquinas's writing style is characterized by its clarity and logical precision, making it accessible to both scholars and general readers. The text's incorporation of interactive links and annotations enhances the reading experience, offering readers a more comprehensive understanding of Aquinas's complex arguments within their historical context. Thomas Aquinas, a highly influential philosopher and theologian, drew upon both Christian doctrine and Aristotelian philosophy to create the Summa Theologica. His deep understanding of both intellectual traditions allowed him to reconcile faith and reason in a way that had a lasting impact on Western thought. Aquinas's dedication to exploring the nature of God and the universe shines through in this comprehensive work, showcasing his intellectual breadth and depth. I highly recommend Summa Theologica to readers interested in delving into the complexities of theological and philosophical discourse. Aquinas's profound insights and meticulous reasoning make this text a must-read for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the relationship between faith and reason.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Torah Unabridged is a detailed examination of legal reasoning in the Hebrew Bible. Focusing on the exegetical operations by which biblical laws related to intermarriage were applied to circumstances and persons that lie outside the sphere of their explicit content, this book reconstructs the ways in which laws regarding intermarriage evolved, were interpreted, and were applied across time and place. William A. Tooman argues that the “exegetical impulse” to expand upon the gaps left by laws relating to marriage in the Torah is expressed in several distinctive ways in later texts in the Hebrew Bible. Adopting a diachronic approach, Tooman examines the techniques biblical writers used in their appropriation, expansion, and manipulation of legal ideas within earlier biblical texts in order to apply the laws to more situations, circumstances, and people. Tooman’s analysis reveals that from Exodus to Ezra-Nehemiah, legal reasoning on intermarriage moved in a singular direction: toward an ever-greater restriction of marriage between Israelites/Jews and gentiles. The final chapter sums up the ways that this was accomplished, summarizing the logical and exegetical operations executed in the process of expanding the relevance of these laws, and describing the hermeneutical assumptions that motivated the process. Grounded in a detailed philological analysis of the Hebrew texts, this tightly argued monograph is an important impetus to further debate in the field. It will be welcomed by biblical scholars and by specialists in the history of law.
