This volume consists of a collection of invited papers on the theory of rings and modules, most of which were presented at the biennial Ohio State — Denison Conference, May 1992, in memory of Hans Zassenhaus. The topics of these papers represent many modern trends in Ring Theory. The wide variety of methodologies and techniques demonstrated will be valuable in particular to young researchers in the area. Covering a broad range, this book should appeal to a wide spectrum of researchers in algebra and number theory.

Based in large part on the comprehensive "First Course in Ring Theory" by the same author, this book provides a comprehensive set of problems and solutions in ring theory that will serve not only as a teaching aid to instructors using that book, but also for students, who will see how ring theory theorems are applied to solving ring-theoretic problems and how good proofs are written. The author demonstrates that problem-solving is a lively process: in "Comments" following many solutions he discusses what happens if a hypothesis is removed, whether the exercise can be further generalized, what would be a concrete example for the exercise, and so forth. Ring Theory provides information pertinent to the fundamental aspects of ring theory. This book covers a variety of topics related to ring theory, including restricted semi-primary rings, finite free resolutions, generalized rational identities, quotient rings, idealizer rings, identities of Azumaya algebras, endomorphism rings, and some remarks on rings with solvable units. Organized into 24 chapters, this book begins with an overview of the characterization of restricted semi-primary rings. This text then examines the case where K is a Hensel ring and A is a separable algebra. Other chapters consider establishing the basic properties of the four classes of projective modules, with emphasis on the finitely generated case. This book discusses as well the non-finitely generated cases and studies infinitely generated projective modules.
