This book introduces a new point-set level approach to stable homotopy theory that has already had many applications and promises to have a lasting impact on the subject. Given the sphere spectrum $S$, the authors construct an associative, commutative, and unital smash product in a complete and cocomplete category of ``$S$-modules'' whose derived category is equivalent to the classical stable homotopy category. This construction allows for a simple and algebraically manageable definition of ``$S$-algebras'' and ``commutative $S$-algebras'' in terms of associative, or associative and commutative, products $R\wedge SR \longrightarrow R$. These notions are essentially equivalent to the earlier notions of $A {\infty $ and $E {\infty $ ring spectra, and the older notions feed naturally into the new framework to provide plentiful examples. There is an equally simple definition of $R$-modules in terms of maps $R\wedge SM\longrightarrow M$. When $R$ is commutative, the category of $R$-modules also has a

This book is based on talks presented at the Summer School on Interactions between Homotopy theory and Algebra held at the University of Chicago in the summer of 2004. The goal of this book is to create a resource for background and for current directions of research related to deep connections between homotopy theory and algebra, including algebraic geometry, commutative algebra, and representation theory. The articles in this book are aimed at the audience of beginning researchers with varied mathematical backgrounds and have been written with both the quality of exposition and the accessibility to novices in mind.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The academic year 1996-97 was designated as a special year in Algebraic Topology at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL). In addition to guest lecturers and special courses, an international conference was held entitled "Current trends in algebraic topology with applications to algebraic geometry and physics". The series of plenary lectures included in this volume indicate the great breadth of the conference and the lively interaction that took place among various areas of mathematics. Original research papers were submitted, and all submissions were refereed to the usual journal standards.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Algebraic topology (also known as homotopy theory) is a flourishing branch of modern mathematics. It is very much an international subject and this is reflected in the background of the 36 leading experts who have contributed to the Handbook. Written for the reader who already has a grounding in the subject, the volume consists of 27 expository surveys covering the most active areas of research. They provide the researcher with an up-to-date overview of this exciting branch of mathematics.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The talks given at the Arolla Conference on Algebraic Topology covered a broad spectrum of current research in homotopy theory, offering participants the possibility to sample and relish selected morsels of homotopy theory, much as a participant in a wine tasting partakes of a variety of fine wines. True to the spirit of the conference, the proceedings included in this volume present a savory sampler of homotopical delicacies. Readers will find within these pages a compilation of articles describing current research in the area, including classical stable and unstable homotopy theory, configuration spaces, group cohomology, K-theory, localization, p-compact groups, and simplicial theory.

BOOK EXCERPT:
As part of its series of Emphasis Years in Mathematics, Northwestern University hosted an International Conference on Algebraic Topology. The purpose of the conference was to develop new connections between homotopy theory and other areas of mathematics. This proceedings volume grew out of that event. Topics discussed include algebraic geometry, cohomology of groups, algebraic $K$-theory, and $\mathbb{A 1$ homotopy theory. Among the contributors to the volume were Alejandro Adem,Ralph L. Cohen, Jean-Louis Loday, and many others. The book is suitable for graduate students and research mathematicians interested in homotopy theory and its relationship to other areas of mathematics.

BOOK EXCERPT:
The Handbook of Homotopy Theory provides a panoramic view of an active area in mathematics that is currently seeing dramatic solutions to long-standing open problems, and is proving itself of increasing importance across many other mathematical disciplines. The origins of the subject date back to work of Henri Poincaré and Heinz Hopf in the early 20th century, but it has seen enormous progress in the 21st century. A highlight of this volume is an introduction to and diverse applications of the newly established foundational theory of ¥ -categories. The coverage is vast, ranging from axiomatic to applied, from foundational to computational, and includes surveys of applications both geometric and algebraic. The contributors are among the most active and creative researchers in the field. The 22 chapters by 31 contributors are designed to address novices, as well as established mathematicians, interested in learning the state of the art in this field, whose methods are of increasing importance in many other areas.

BOOK EXCERPT:
This volume introduces equivariant homotopy, homology, and cohomology theory, along with various related topics in modern algebraic topology. It explains the main ideas behind some of the most striking recent advances in the subject. The works begins with a development of the equivariant algebraic topology of spaces culminating in a discussion of the Sullivan conjecture that emphasizes its relationship with classical Smith theory. The book then introduces equivariant stable homotopy theory, the equivariant stable homotopy category, and the most important examples of equivariant cohomology theories. The basic machinery that is needed to make serious use of equivariant stable homotopy theory is presented next, along with discussions of the Segal conjecture and generalized Tate cohomology. Finally, the book gives an introduction to "brave new algebra", the study of point-set level algebraic structures on spectra and its equivariant applications. Emphasis is placed on equivariant complex cobordism, and related results on that topic are presented in detail.
