BOOK EXCERPT:
How advanced is the technology that exists today, what are we using it for, and can machines turn on their human creators? What is transcendence and why will we all be familiar with it? Technology is growing exponentially and the moment when it merges with the human mind, called “The Singularity,” is visible in our imminent future. Can humans, limited by slow biological evolution, compete with synthetic intelligence? Science and technology are pushing forward, transforming life as we know it—perhaps even giving humans a shot of immortality. Who will benefit from this? Where did the idea of robots originate and why are humans fearful of decision-making robots that may be able to create goals and objectives, and work toward achieving them? This book examines the history and future of robotics, artificial intelligence, zombies and a Transhumanist utopia/dystopia integrating man with machine. How did it all begin, and what’s in store for humans today, in the near future, and in the distant future? Haze and Eguino explore the fascinating role of artificial intelligence from a practical human perspective and discover that the mind-altering process necessary to accept and integrate with the inevitable is already underway, molding human consciousness. 4-Page Color Section.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Growing from their early roots in Caribbean voodoo to their popularity today, zombies are epidemic. Their presence is pervasive, whether they are found in video games, street signs, hard drives, or even international politics. These eighteen original essays by an interdisciplinary group of scholars examine how the zombie has evolved over time, its continually evolving manifestations in popular culture, and the unpredictable effects the zombie has had on late modernity. Topics covered include representations of zombies in films, the zombie as environmental critique, its role in mass psychology and how issues of race, class and gender are expressed through zombie narratives. Collectively, the work enhances our understanding of the popularity and purposes of horror in the modern era. Instructors considering this book for use in a course may request an examination copy here.

BOOK EXCERPT:
Combining phenomenological insights from Brentano and Sartre, but also drawing on recent work on consciousness by analytic philosophers, this book defends the view that conscious states are reflexive, and necessarily so, i.e., that they have a built-in, “implicit” awareness of their own occurrence, such that the subject of a conscious state has an immediate, non-objectual acquaintance with it. As part of this investigation, the book also explores the relationship between reflexivity and the phenomenal, or “what-it-is-like,” dimension of conscious experience, defending the innovative thesis that phenomenal character is constituted by the implicit self-awareness built into every conscious state. This account stands in marked contrast to most influential extant theories of phenomenal character, including qualia theories, according to which phenomenal character is a matter of having phenomenal sensations, and representationalism, according to which phenomenal character is constituted by representational content.
