The Astronomical Institute of the Romanian Academy consists of the three observatories in Romania, located in Bucharest, Cluj-Napoca, and Timisoara. The institute describes its history, instruments, buildings, meetings, personnel, and its publication entitled "Romanian Astronomical Journal."

The First Edition of The Sun from Space, completed in 1999, focused on the early accomplishments of three solar spacecraft, SOHO, Ulysses, and Yohkoh, primarily during a minimum in the Sun’s 11-year cycle of magnetic activity. The comp- hensive Second Edition includes the main ndings of these three spacecraft over an entire activity cycle, including two minima and a maximum, and discusses the signi cant results of six more solar missions. Four of these, the Hinode, RHESSI, STEREO, and TRACE missions were launched after the First Edition was either nished or nearly so, and the other two, the ACE and Wind spacecraft, extend our investigations from the Sun to its varying input to the Earth. The Second Edition does not contain simple updates or cosmetic patch ups to the material in the First Edition. It instead contains the relevant discoveries of the past decade, integrated into chapters completely rewritten for the purpose. "Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts" appearing twice a year has become oneof the fundamental publications in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics andneighbouring sciences. It is the most important English-language abstracting journal in the mentioned branches. The abstracts are classified under more than a hundred subject categories, thus permitting a quick survey of the whole extended material. The AAA is a valuable and important publication for all students and scientists working in the fields of astronomy and related sciences. As such it represents a necessary ingredient of any astronomical library all over the world.

First observed by Galileo, Saturn lies in the distant reaches of the solar system; it is the sixth planet, a gaseous giant between Jupiter and Uranus. It takes its name from the mythological father of Jupiter and Roman god of agriculture. Because of the famous circle of rings Saturn is one of the most well-regarded occupants of the galaxy. Despite their continuous appearance from Earth, the rings are actually space dust and debris trapped by Saturn's gravitational pull, a fact garnered from several satellite passes and telescope observations. The origin of Saturn's rings, however, remains a mystery. Apart from the rings, we also are aware of its moon system, with the most intriguing planetoid called Titan, itself having been the subject of science fiction speculation as a home to life. Saturn has been visited by Pioneer 11 and the two Voyager probes, with Cassini slated to arrive in 2004. Our study of this most intriguing planet will continue into the foreseeable future, with the hopes of resolving the mysteries it hides. This book provides a thorough and interesting overview of Saturn, from its initial observation centuries ago to the contemporary satellite fly-bys. Anyone captivated by the mysteries of space and the wonders of Saturn needs to understand the background covered here. After the overview is a substantial and carefully selected set of abstracts of literature pertaining to Saturn, with easy access then given through author, title, and subject indexes.

The NATO ARW on the problems of ground-based observations of Solar Eclipses was held in Sinaia (Romania) between 1 and 5 June 1996. The Workshop was divided into seven sessions, in which 17 papers were given, by key speakers, along with 30 oral presentations. Additionally, 30 posters were presented. This issue contains only the invited and oral papers. The posters are to be published in a special issue of the Romanian Astronomical Journal. The contributions were based on our present knowledge of solar corona physics and on the perspectives for future total eclipse observations, focussing especially on that of August 11, 1999, which will be the last eclipse of the century. The workshop sessions reviewed the results of past eclipse observations, coronal hot and cold structures, coronal heating, public education, and instrumental problems. At the end of the meeting a fruitful general discussion drew out problems to be studied and techniques to be used for forthcoming observations. Posters completed the workshop contributions.

Celestial Encounters is for anyone who has ever wondered about the foundations of chaos. In 1888, the 34-year-old Henri Poincaré submitted a paper that was to change the course of science, but not before it underwent significant changes itself. "The Three-Body Problem and the Equations of Dynamics" won a prize sponsored by King Oscar II of Sweden and Norway and the journal Acta Mathematica, but after accepting the prize, Poincaré found a serious mistake in his work. While correcting it, he discovered the phenomenon of chaos. Starting with the story of Poincaré's work, Florin Diacu and Philip Holmes trace the history of attempts to solve the problems of celestial mechanics first posed in Isaac Newton's Principia in 1686. In describing how mathematical rigor was brought to bear on one of our oldest fascinations--the motions of the heavens--they introduce the people whose ideas led to the flourishing field now called nonlinear dynamics. In presenting the modern theory of dynamical systems, the models underlying much of modern science are described pictorially, using the geometrical language invented by Poincaré. More generally, the authors reflect on mathematical creativity and the roles that chance encounters, politics, and circumstance play in it.
