Romantic Prayer

BOOK EXCERPT:

Whilst religion and the secular have been continually debated contexts for literature of the Romantic era, the dominant scholarly focus has been on doctrines and denominations. In analysing the motif of devotion, Romantic Prayer shifts attention to the quintessential articulation of religion as lived experience, as practice, and as a performative rather than descriptive phenomenon. In an era when the tenability and rationality of prayer was much contested, poetry--a form with its own interlinked history with prayer--was a unique place to register what prayer meant in modernity. This study illustrates how the discourse of prayer continually intervened in the way that poetic practices evolved and responded to the religious and secular questions of the eighteenth and nineteenth-century moment. After laying out the details of prayer's historical position in the Romantic era across a spread of religious traditions, Romantic Prayer turns to a range of writers, from the identifiably religious to the staunchly sceptical. William Cowper and Anna Letitia Barbauld are shown to use poetry to reflect and reinvent the ideals of prayer inherited from their own denominational histories. Samuel Taylor Coleridge's work is analysed as part of a long engagement with the rationality of prayer, culminating in an explicit 'philosophy' of prayer; William Wordsworth--by contrast--keeps prayer at an aesthetic distance, continually alluding to prayerful language but rarely committing to devotional voice itself. John Keats, Percy Bysshe Shelley, and Lord Byron are treated in the context of departing from Christianity, under the influence of Enlightenment, materialist, and atheist critiques--what happens to prayer in poetry when prayer as a language traditionally conceived is becoming impossible to maintain?

Prayers With Love

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

After many years of struggle trying to understand what it was that God wanted me to do with my life, I came to the realizationthat we are all given different gifts and that God will lead us to do Hiss Will if we place our total trust in Him. I have always prayed all the regular prayers that I was taught while growing up, and I read many booklets that contained wonderful writings from other people. These were all sufficient at the time and fulfilled my need for prayer. As my spirit grew with love for God so was the need for other kinds of prayer. And not knowing where to find it I began to talk to God, just to talk to Him, and pour out my love for Him as if He was standing right in front of me. As a result, my love for Him grew stronger and stronger, and my need to tell Him how I felt grew as well. In the last fey years, I decided to put in writing my prayers and to share with others the great gift of love I have received Every prayer is a testament of love, and humility. I hope that you, dear reader, are inspired by them and feel the same love that I felt, when I wrote these “Prayers With Love” will help you to attain eternal salvation — by dying sincerely repentant and, therefore, in the State of Grace. Be mindful at all times that: “For many are called, but few chosen.” (Matt. 20:16, 22:14). (Douay- Rheims, the true Holy Bible.)

The Folly Of Prayer

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Prayer can feel mysteriously difficult, boringly perfunctory and frustratingly out of our control. Often prayer brings us comfort, but sometimes, especially when there aren t easy resolutions or prayers go unanswered, it intensifies and focuses our sense of longing, pain and care. And often God uses our times of darkness and desperation to awaken our hearts to the ache within us--and the cries of those suffering around us. Prayer is all about coming before God to face life head-on, with all its jagged edges of mystery, joy, longing and agony. In fact, says pastor Matt Woodley, prayer is actually a real encounter with the untamable God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and therefore our experience of it should reflect the power, mystery and even risk of entering into relationship with the Lord of the universe. In this book Woodley strips away all the religious-speak and presuppositions we have about prayer, distilling it to the essence of wholehearted engagement with the living God. Exploring an earthy, unadorned, jargon-free approach to prayer, Woodley unpacks a host of fresh synonyms for God-encounters, including prayer as desperation, invocation, mystery, astonishment, groaning and even absence. These marginal ways of praying compel us to engage marginal people--the desperate, the groaning, the victimized and the ignored. As we pray God will open our eyes to the pain of the world around us. With stories from his own experience and biblical and historical examples, Woodley gives fresh language to describe a life grounded in prayer that leads to compassion and service.
