This book addresses the complexity of Russian verbal prefixation system that has been extensively studied but yet not explained. Traditionally, different meanings have been investigated and listed in the dictionaries and grammars and more recently linguists attempted to unify various prefix usages under more general descriptions. The existent semantic approaches, however, do not aim to use semantic representations in order to account for the problems of prefix stacking and aspect determination. This task has been so far undertaken by syntactic approaches to prefixation, that divide verbal prefixes in classes and limit complex verb formation by restricting structural positions available for the members of each class. I show that these approaches have two major drawbacks: the implicit prediction of the non-existence of complex biaspectual verbs and the absence of uniformly accepted formal criteria for the underlying prefix classification. In this book the reader can find an implementable formal semantic approach to prefixation that covers five prefixes: za-, na-, po-, pere-, and do-. It is shown how to predict the existence, semantics, and aspect of a given complex verb with the help of the combination of an LTAG and frame semantics. The task of identifying the possible affix combinations is distributed between three modules: syntax, which is kept simple (only basic structural assumptions), frame semantics, which ensures that the constraints are respected, and pragmatics, which rules out some prefixed verbs and restricts the range of available interpretations. For the purpose of the evaluation of the theory, an implementation of the proposed analysis for a grammar fragment using a metagrammar description is provided. It is shown that the proposed analysis delivers more accurate and complete predictions with respect to the existence of complex verbs than the most precise syntactic account.

This dissertation provides a coherent, synchronic, broad-coverage, generative phonology of Russian. I test the grammar empirically in a number of ways to determine its goodness of fit to Russian. In taking this approach, I aim to avoid making untested (or even incoherent) generalizations based on only a handful of examples. In most cases, the tests show that there are exceptions to the theory, but at least we know what the exceptions are, a baseline is set against which future theories can be measured, and in most cases the percentage of exceptional cases is reduced to below 5%. The principal theoretical outcomes of the work are as follows. First, I show that all of the phonological or morphophonological processes reviewed can be described by a grammar no more powerful than context-free. Secondly, I exploit probabilistic constraints in the syllable structure grammar to explain why constraints on word-marginal onsets and codas are weaker than on word-internal onsets and codas. I argue that the features []/- initial] and []/- final], and extraprosodicity, are unnecessary for this purpose.

This volume offers a variety of perspectives on two of the main topics situated at the crossroads between lexical semantics and syntax, namely: (a) aspect and its correspondence with syntactic structure; and (b) the delimitation of syntactic structures from verb classes. Almost from Aristotle’s Metaphysics, it has been assumed that verbs invoke a mental image about the way in which eventualities are distributed over time. When it comes to determining time schemata, the lexical class to which the verb belongs represents a first step. Speaking about verb classes does not exclusively mean a semantic similarity; rather, verb classes exhibit a bundle of common features and thus show a set of recursive behavior patterns. Beyond the meaning of the verb, both semantic and syntactic factors, together with pragmatic ones, play a decisive role when establishing the aspectual classification of an eventuality. The contributions collected in this book approach the aforementioned lines, either analyzing the relationships between aspect and syntactic structure or traversing the path from a verb class to its syntactic manifestation. Some of them stress diachronic filiations, while others include processes of word formation in the debate; some of them focus on certain classes, such as movement verbs or psychological verbs, while others examine specific constructions. A number of chapters also discuss relevant theoretical issues concerning the analysis of aspect. In sum, the kaleidoscopic view provided by this book allows the reader to delve deeper into one of the most controversial – as well as exciting – topics within current linguistics.

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 10th International Tbilisi Symposium on Logic, Language and Computation, TbiLLC 2013, held in Gudauri, Georgia, in September 2013. The conference series is centered around the interaction between logic, language and computation. The contributions represent these three fields and the symposia aim to foster interaction between them. The book consists of 16 papers that were carefully reviewed and selected from 26 submissions. Each paper has passed through a rigorous peer-review process before being accepted for publication. The volume also contains two summaries of the tutorials that took place at the symposium: the one on admissible rules and the one on the formal semantics of aspectual meaning from a cross-linguistic perspective.

This book constitutes extended, revised, and selected papers from the 10th International Symposium of Artificial Intelligence supported by the Japanese Society for Artificial Intelligence, JSAI-isAI 2018. It was held in November 2018 in Yokohama, Japan. The 28 paper full papers and 5 short papers were carefully selected from 97 submissions. The papers selected cover topics in Artificial Intelligence, such as AI and law, business intelligence, human intelligence, logic and engineering, and data analytics and applications.

The present volume offers a selection of papers on current issues in Slavic languages. It takes stock of the past 20 years of linguistic research at the Department of Slavic Studies at Leipzig University. Within these two decades, the scientific writing, teaching, and organization done in this Department strengthened the mode of research in formal description of Slavic languages, formed another center for this kind of linguistic research in the world, and brought about a remarkable amount of scientific output. The authors of this volume are former or present members of the Department of Slavic studies or academic friends. Based on the data from East, West, and South Slavic languages, the papers tackle issues of all grammatical subdisciplines in current models of description, compare parts of the grammars of Slavic languages, explain categories and phrases in Slavic languages that do not exist in present-day Indogermanic languages of Western Europe, and propose ways how to update the standard of lexicography in still less described Slavic languages. A study of language competence is dedicated to the actual requests on heritage speakers and shows how their abilities can be evaluated.

This collection arises from the Fifth International Scientific Conference, “Language and Speech in Synchrony and Diachrony”, held in Taganrog, Russia, devoted to the memory of Russian linguist and philosopher Professor P.V. Chesnokov. It examines the functioning of different levels of linguistic units and categories of speech with regard to intra-and cross-cultural communication in pragmatics of speech. The theory of language and speech is represented not only in synchrony, but in diachrony, in the comparative and typological aspects of languages from various groups, including non-literate Yenisei languages. A further subject of discussion within is the problem of translation, and the relation of language and speech, text and discourse. The volume consists of six parts: Part I: Language and its grammatical categories in diachronic aspect; Part II: Grammar and other subsystems of the language; Part III: Cross-cultural communication and translation; Part IV: Problems of linguistic and diachronic typology; Part V: Pragmalinguistics and speech; and Part VI: Text, discourse, speech in anthropocentric paradigm. The book will be of interest to scholars of philology, linguistics, culture and humanities, as well as those interested in issues of language, culture and language teaching methods.

This study advances a new approach to the history of Russian aspect, integrating recent work on aspectology with contemporary theories of language changes and development. Using data from five Old Russian texts, the author traces the development of the aspectual opposition from its early lexical roots to the sixteenth century, when contextual and discourse concerns came to the fore.
