In our rapidly globalising world, “the global scholar” is a key concept for reimagining the roles of academics at the nexus of the global and the local. This book critically explores the implications of the concept for understanding postgraduate studies and supervision. The Covid pandemic has put all modern societies to a serious test of resilience. The interdisciplinary research on which this book is based examined how four European governments behaved in these circumstances. During the months of the crisis, the team of experts coordinated by the editors of this volume took a close look at the decision-making processes in the Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, and Slovakia – the so-called Visegrad Four. The inquiries focused on experiences from the academic, health, economic and social fields. The methods of comparison included surveys, interviews, discourse analysis, for which the adaptive leadership theory provided the conceptual framework. The conclusions are both academic and practical. Aside the description of the pandemic responses, the research had a formative dimension: how can an adaptive leadership approach better help societies manage the health and societal impacts of similar challenges? The spectrum of emerging anti-democratic tendencies in the region provided the specific context of the exercise. The four states face varying degrees of democratic backsliding as well as illiberal influences that have affected their response to the pandemic, which gives this research on the Visegrad Four a worldwide resonance.

This collection, edited by Jim A. Kuypers, analyzes genres of public communication to examine how the pandemic has impacted specific areas of scholarship within the communication discipline. Contributors begin each chapter by acknowledging the parameters of their sub-discipline and then discussing key elements being affected by the pandemic and pandemic responses. Viewing the pandemic through the eyes of their sub-disciplines, contributors offer unique insights on the effects of the pandemic upon human communication in their specific area of focus, examining how the pandemic will continue to affect the teaching of their subject areas and providing suggestions for future research. This edited collection brings together social scientists working on race and ethnicity to address the question of the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, with a focus on issues linked to racial and ethnic inequalities. The fourteen chapters that make up this collection were produced during the pandemic in 2020 and are intended to address key facets of the impact of the pandemic in contemporary Europe, the United States, and globally. Individual chapters address the pandemic by drawing both on empirical research and conceptual analysis. They also seek to draw important connections between broader dimensions of racial and ethnic inequalities and the health inequalities that have been highlighted by the sharp impact of the pandemic on particular communities and groups. This volume speaks to the need for researchers working on race and ethnicity to respond to the Covid-19 pandemic through both original research and by reflection on current policy challenges and interventions. The chapters in this book were originally published as a themed issue of Ethnic and Racial Studies.

This collection brings together perspectives from early-career LGBTQ+ scholars as they navigate the scholarly publishing landscape, highlighting their experiences and challenges in providing greater representation within the academic community and existing scholarship. The volume reflects on the ways in which scholarly output is intricately linked with scholarly identity and the challenges LGBTQ+ scholars face when their scholarly and gender and sexual identities can often seem to be in conflict. The book showcases perspectives from doctoral students and early-career scholars from around the world working across different disciplines, supported by case studies, autoethnographic narratives, and discourse analysis, to explore key issues facing those who identify as LGBTQ+ or who wish to research and publish on topics relating to gender and sexual identity. These include negotiating positionality, the role of writing styles in identity construction for queer scholars, the ways in which publishing gatekeepers perpetuate heteronormativity, and the part support networks play for researchers.
