This book is a compilation of true events which occured in the author's childhood, teenage years...and beyond. A brief history of the area known as Linden which was settled by the Scottish in the late 1700's, the first of whom was R.F.Allicock, the ancestor of most of my schoolmates, is also included. Beyond Knowing

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Working as a medical examiner, Dr. Janis Amatuzio has found that by listening and talking to loved ones of the deceased, she can offer them a sense of closure. In doing so, she has heard — and here retells — extraordinary stories of spiritual and otherworldly events surrounding the transition between life and death. As in her first book, Forever Ours, Dr. Amatuzio presents the amazing, heartfelt accounts told to her by grieving family members, patients, doctors, nurses, clergy, and police officers. Along with these stories, she shares her own story — reflecting on the course of her career, the bonds she has formed over the years, the lessons she has learned, and her conclusion that “Everything truly is all right.” This powerful book honors the mystery of life and death, exploring the realms of visions, synchronicities, and communications on death’s threshold. Told in the voice of a compassionate scientist who sees death every day, these stories eloquently convey the patterns of truth Dr. Amatuzio has found in what she sees and hears. Beyond Knowing explores the wisdom the living might find in these accounts and shows how that wisdom changes lives.

Beyond The Lyrics

BOOK EXCERPT:

I write fiction. Do you ever wish you could go back in time- in your DeLorean if you wish, with the ability to not repeat the bad, but live the good, again? It's what I write. To me a book that makes you think, and think too hard, decreases the "fun" of thinking. To me, when you read my books, I just want you to let your mind go, causing a slant of a smile or an eruption of giggles. And you don't need to think about that. That's more of a spontaneous type of thing.................. If you want to THINK about reading a book that will make you THINK, I'll loan you my old Nursing School books.

Beyond Stereotypes In Black And White

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This book spotlights the plight of African American boys and men, examining multiple systems beyond education, incarceration, and employment to assess their impact on the mental and physical health of African American boys and men—and challenges everyday citizens to help start a social transformation. Beyond Stereotypes in Black and White: How Everyday Leaders Can Build Healthier Opportunities for African American Boys and Men exposes the daily plight of African American boys and men, identifying the social and policy infrastructure that ensnares them in a downward spiral that worsens with each exposure to our system that offers unemployment, low-wage work, marginalization, and incarceration. The book examines why African American boys and men are more sickly and die younger than any other racial group in the United States, have very few health coverage options, and are consistently incarcerated at rates that are wildly disproportionate to their representation of the U.S. population; and it documents how this tremendous injustice comes with a cost that burdens all groups in American society, not just African Americans. Additionally, the author challenges readers to see that all of us must act individually and collectively to right this social wrong.

Columbine 20 Years Later And Beyond

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This powerful retrospective analysis of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting aftermath considers society's response to the attack, long-term implications of the shooting, and the ways in which research and related policy must continue to move forward. An indispensable resource for anyone interested in learning about the long-term impact of the 1999 Columbine High School shooting, Columbine, 20 Years Later and Beyond provides a comprehensive look at how the event unfolded, what has changed since the attack, and how this information can be used to prevent future mass shootings. Authors Jaclyn Schildkraut and Glenn Muschert, both experts on mass shootings, share their broad understanding of this tragedy and its aftermath. Columbine became the measuring stick against which all other mass shootings would be compared, and this book details with great sensitivity the ensuing changes to school security, law enforcement's response to active shooter situations, threat assessment practices, legislative efforts, and media coverage of unfolding situations. With delicacy and tact, Schildkraut and Muschert help to answer the painful question raised by a stone on the wall of the Columbine Memorial: "What have we learned?".

Beyond Crazy

BOOK EXCERPT:

Being in a band is Stelle's salvation. It is her escape from the chaotic clutter at home and her mother's depression. Even though she is able to lose herself for a few hours, pounding away on the drums in the basement of her dad's new house, as soon as she leaves, it's as if the world is going crazy all around her: one bandmate's parents refuse to acknowledge their son is gay; her band's only potential lead singer dresses like a vampire; and even her best friend, Lu, with the "perfect family" has been on edge lately. But it's the strange, confused conversations that Stelle has with her grandmother in the nursing home that hold the key to unlocking the unhappiness at the heart of her family.

From Mammy To Miss America And Beyond

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

How do the mass media contribute to the social and economic advantages of the privileged and the subjection of African American women? Does America really care about providing equal opportunities for African American women? Passionately written and supported with detailed evidence this book shows the deeply rooted abiding cancer of oppresion in American society. It reveals the formal and informal ways in which African American women have been exluded from equal participation before and after the time of slavery. It will shock many who complacently believe that America is already a land on equality and it will give new heart to the many others who experience racism and sexism as daily facts of life.

School Daze

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Warning! 'But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.' Matthew 8:6 (KJV) Take heed, all of you unbelieving miscreants in the public school system bent on programming kids for the deceitful New World Order. That warning is from the King of kings! School Daze is written with a satirical bite and is tempered with comic relief. Its author, Lucia Jones, a teacher in the public school system, gives an up-close and personal look at the biggest issues plaguing the System today. Among these issues are school zoning that forces students to move schools (and sometimes neighborhoods) often, a lax teaching curriculum, incompetent school officials, sex education (starting in kindergarten), ditching the basics and the 3 Rs for cuddly, feely programs loaded with political correctness and the two faces of multiculturalism. Christian values no longer play a role in public schools. Some public schools have taken God out of the Pledge of Allegiance and have even gone so far as pledging allegiance to the Earth. Prayer is not allowed, and the Ten Commandments are no longer displayed. Christmas parties are now winter holiday parties. Even the treats for these parties are at the mercy of the System—no more candy and ice cream, but tofu smoothies and yogurt cups. Lucia Jones is a devout Christian, mother of four, grandmother of eleven, and a veteran elementary school teacher in the public school system of twenty-five-plus years. She has spent eighteen of those years teaching at a small public elementary school on an Indian reservation. Lucia lives in Northern Nevada with her husband, Tom.

Beyond Subculture

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Presenting a new approach to the study of youth culture and popular music, Beyond Subculture re-examines the link between music and subcultures and asks the question; in an ageing world, can pop music still be an automatic metaphor for youth culture? Using case studies and first-hand interviews with consumer and producers including Noel Gallagher and Talvin Singh, Rupa Huq investigates a series of musically-centred global youth cultures including hip-hop, electronic dance music and bhangra. With ‘Generation X’ becoming an increasingly redundant term, this book will help students redefine their ideas of youth culture and will be an invaluable addition to their studies.
