The parts of the childs development which are formally planned came to seem important to those who plan and administer the schools, while the parts which are left to informal contacts are overlooked as of small importance, or are forgotten. Yet they continue to be very important, perhaps more important than all the matter included in formal education. Rural education, like all education, should not limit itself to the processes of the schoolroom, but at every stage from primary school to university should insist that pupils and students shall learn also from the great traditions of common life.The present work contains valuable relevant matter on diverse aspects of rural education. Elementary Education in Rural India provides an in-depth view of the present educational scenario in rural India.

This book explores the problems present in Bengal villages specifically, which represent problems found within the rest of rural India, therefore the same measures with very little modification could be employed in the work of rural reconstruction and rural education in those parts. The author discusses issues related to the government, as well as the caste system, and the social and religious customs, which he has argued not only hampered the path to progress, but reduced the people further and further to misery and despair.

This book offers a cutting-edge contribution on the importance of secondary education and assesses the strengths and weaknesses of its growth in India. Secondary education, long neglected, faces countless challenges and will require tremendous financial resources, millions of additional trained teachers, and vast infrastructure in terms of buildings, laboratories, libraries, ICT facilities, etc. The book examines these critical issues, with particular reference to the situation in India. Part I of this book, which comprises the bulk of the volume, consists of a bibliography of approximately 650 publications on child education. The publications include articles from 58 Indian journals and newspapers published in the English language. The bibliography also references books, research reports, and doctoral theses that have been reviewed in journals and newspapers. The bibliography has both an author and a subject index. Full bibliographic information is provided in both indexes. Part II of the book includes a description of a proposed children's university, which would house children from around India, include several centers of research on problems related to child development, and sponsor cultural centers for each Indian State. Also included are: (1) an essay concerning the problems and potentials of research on children's reading; (2) excerpts from the Indian Constitution that concern issues relating to children; (3) statistics on school enrollment and adult literacy in India; and (4) a list of 79 specialists in the field of child education.
