Common Sense Is Not So Common

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

The Common Condition Of Today's Secular Society As many pundits have noted, over the last 60 years we have seen a growing secularism, and in fact anti-religious fervor gain traction in the United States. The accelerated momentum of this movement has run head into the Judeo/Christian heritage established by the Country's founders. The push back from the Christian community and traditionalists, deemed by some to be the 'cultural wars', has been at best tepid. Many conservatives have conceded that the secularists have made progress. Often appearing as rigid and doctrinaire, traditionalists can't seem to counter the compelling mantra, "if it feels good and does not hurt anybody-- than why not do it " In actuality the above mantra is less shallow and self serving than it first may sound. I believe that it is the basis of most common behavior in the US today and more so around the World. Some students of the Bible will remind that this philosophy has fueled mankind's common behavior from creation? Did not the Jews begin an orgy of decadence and idol worship when Moses was not looking and was away receiving the Ten Commandments on Mt. Sinai? Did not the Nazis consider the Jews less than human so that when they were secretly exterminating them in the gas chambers it was OK - because the Third Reich believed that only the Arian race was in fact human? Therefore killing millions of Jews was not really "hurting anybody" because they weren't killing real people. The dangers of this relativist mentality are not readily apparent - therefore relativism is the common denominator propelling mankind into a new more dangerous age. Spiritual Walk leads to Uncommon Sense I have taken the time to establish this foundation because if you are beginning your walk in faith -the above will sound very unappealing. BUT this book can provide you, the reader with some very important tips about how to obtain an uncommon sense of peace in today's troubled world. Frankly we believe that it can only be achieved by carefully reading scripture and letting it speak to you. Though this thought today is uncommon - except to a remnant of a diminishing culture - both the author and I know it to be absolutely true. Since I have known the author for over 30 years I can speak authoritatively when I tell you that she is one who traveled extensively in her youth and experienced the real human tragedy emanating from the pagan relativist mantra. She is not a person who is "judgmental." But through her journey and walk she has seen that pagan secularism does in fact hurt people, damage families, increase the early termination of life via abortion, lead to societal breakdown and most surely stirs personal chaos and unrest. She has evolved into one of the most uncommonly spiritual women that I have ever known. Her book works for her. This book is a great beginning to those seeking answers and/or can be an old friend to those who have realized that the fruits of wisdom do not derive from the common world. Common sense grows from a spiritual journey that cannot be fully realized via intellectual debate or over thinking the human condition. That is why "Common Sense is NOT so Common."

Common Sense Spirituality In A Secular Age

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

This wide-ranging tome explores age-old questions, such as Does God exist? Is there life after death? Are we more than the biological machines science says we are? What is the nature of reality? Backed by five years of formal research and a lifetime of study, investigation, and analysis, the author works to answer these questions from a common sense perspective aimed at a modern-day audience. Clearly written and with the lay person in mind, the author challenges the reader to accompany him on an engaging journey to arrive at the answers. Along the way, "travelers" learn many interesting facts about the origins of religious beliefs, examine pivotal developments in the history of Christianity, and delve into scientific theories that compete with religious doctrine for our hearts and minds, particularly those concerning the existence of God and an afterlife. These include quantum mechanics, current notions about the brain and consciousness, and findings from critical research in the controversial field of the paranormal. The author encourages the reader to examine the evidence and then reflect on the dialogue and logically constructed arguments he presents. If you accept his invitation to join him in that quest, he asserts: "I feel excited for you, as you are about to begin an intellectual journey that will frequently astound you and challenge your worldview, a contentious trek from which I am convinced it is virtually impossible not to emerge deeply changed in how we view the world and what we call reality."

The Secular As Methodology

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Secularization is a process that has been taking place throughout the world, but especially in the West. It refers to limitations of various types to religious thoughts, activities, ownership, and power, but does not necessarily mean limitation on religious freedom. Because of this contested double effect, secularization is perceived both negatively and positively. I propose that the secular be viewed primarily as a methodology in various areas of life, beginning most clearly with science, but extending to many other areas of thought and activity. When this is done I believe people then have the clear option to apply their faith to all of their thought and action and at the same time to allow for correction and improvement to their thought and action. These corrections and improvements will be debated, but in the end, for Christians, they are dependent on interpretations of the Bible. Furthermore, I believe the broad result for all people is to clarify the choice to believe in God or rather that we are chosen by God revealed in the Bible who is seeking to have fellowship with us.

Secular Humanism What Does That Mean

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

In the meantime, in between time, the Industrial Revolution began to occur in Europe in 1760, and, in the United States between 1820-1840. The Industrial Revolution paid no attention to Human Nature cognitive metaphysical development___human intelligence. Nor to any ethical, or, moral humanness innate metaphysical proclivity. The Industrial Revolution fostered Herbert Spencer’s, (1820-1910), evolutionary human development “survival of the fittest,” as well as Karl Marx, (1818-1883), economic human development neglecting human intellectual development. Earthy reality notion of Secular Humanism began with Auguste Comte, (1789-1857), and, Emile Durkheim, (1858-1917), as the result of the French Revolution, (1798-1857), when Napoleon Bonaparte crowned himself in Notre Dame Cathedral as Emperor of The French Empire. The French Revolution was not able to acquire democracy for France, nor, humanity, equality, fraternite.

Secular Lyric

eBook Download

BOOK EXCERPT:

Secular Lyric interrogates the distinctively individual ways that Poe, Whitman, and Dickinson transformed classical, romantic, and early modern forms of lyric expression to address the developing conditions of Western modernity, especially the heterogeneity of believers and beliefs in an increasingly secular society. Analyzing historically and formally how these poets inscribed the pressures of the modern crowd in the text of their poems, John Michael shows how the masses appear in these poets’ work as potential readers to be courted and resisted, often at the same time. Unlike their more conventional contemporaries, Poe, Whitman, and Dickinson resist advising, sermonizing or consoling their audiences. They resist most familiar senses of meaning as well. For them, the processes of signification in print rather than the communication of truths become central to poetry, which in turn becomes a characteristic of modern verse in the Western world. Poe, Whitman, and Dickinson, in idiosyncratic but related ways, each disrupt conventional expectations while foregrounding language’s material density, thereby revealing both the potential and the limitations of art in the modern age.
